Guys this fucking windows 10 bullshit is trying to force my computer to upgrade, i've pushed it back but that's as far as i can do

what the fuck can i do to stop it?
>>
They are some sneaky motherfuckers. I left to buy some food yesterday, and when I came home my computer was almost halfway through with the upgrade. I simply pulled the plug on my computer and restarted, then I changed the windows update to allways ask for my permission before any updates.
>>
>>27174127
If you don't have any windows-only programs just switch to Ubuntu senpaitachi
>>
GWX control panel
>>
>>27174127
Disable auto-updates, you should have done that long ago.
>>
just install the damn thing, you faggot
>>
Uninstall system 32 on computer, should block shit like that forever. You're welcome ;)

Kill the process and turn off all updates.

Should I go from Windows 7 to 10? Is there literally anything actually wrong with 10 or are you all just dumb NEETs?
>>
>>27175081
We are all just dumb NEETs
>>
>>27175081
Windows 10 is okay as long as you don't mind having all your files and everything you do uploaded to Microsoft.
>>
>>27175081
10 has a lot of loss of privacy features that would allow certain people to check up on your and if you're doing something illegal
7 is going to have some of those features too, but it won't be as bad

Also, there's no real reason to upgrade if you are satisfied with what you have
7 isn't going to be obsolete (by which I mean, people will stop writing updates for it) until 2023 so we still have a while
>>
that would fucking suck. W10 refuses to recognize my modem
>>
>>27175174

Why do you care if Microsoft has your file?
>User 10000037021 likes anime and porn
>Wow, just like everyone else
>>
If you disable auto updates, how do you know what ones to actually install? It says that there are 50 "important" updates I should install, but I don't really want to have to google each one to see if they try installing Win 10 or something.
>>
>>27175224
Why don't you care? Holy fucking shit

at the end of the day, maybe
at the end of the year, they are going to start introducing legislation that makes only certain kinds of files okay
at the end of the decade, they are going to start charging and/or fining people who aren't doing things that they want
at the end of the century, they are going to start mandating specific things and arresting those who don't comply

blah blah blah, slippery slope fallacy, but the reason it matters is because it sets a precedent
freedom becomes less constitutional and more up to debate as people reference how infringing on what was once considered private lead to something positive

>>
>>27175563
slippery slope is a fallacy in the same way that everyone on 4chan is a degenerate
not actually true and is often misrepresented after criticizing the author
I clearly rectified my argument by saying what's important is not that this might happen in the future, but what how it how people use it as a context
Like the iPhone unlocking fiasco, there are immediate consequences and potential consequences
>>
>>27175648

you're kidding me right
literally every solid formal argument is comprised of past events to prove current positions?

You're still saying "if x happens then y will definitely happen no matter what". Your freedoms aren't being infringed upon because Microsoft is able to see you clicked save on an epic 4chan meme or torrented BBC cuck porn. Because as long as you're still able to use those memes and watch that porn or whatever it is that you do on the internet your freedom is 100% intact.
>>
>>27175910
On the contrary then, give one good reason why Microsoft should be able to do this?
>>
>>27175775
That doesn't work like when windows8 upgraded automatically to 8.1 you can click delay but it's going to automatically do it at a set time, or the next time you restart it.

Probably nothing you can do OP except go to microsoft.com or some official forum, lodge a complaint. Lodging a complaint will be met with being ignored, eyes rolled, and them telling you why windows 10 is better. Literally the only thing you can do is complain and we all should of done that as soon as we heard XP was going away because it was pretty much EVERYBODIES preferred OS.
Unfortunately the only other things you can do is install linux or get a mac. (you could probably get macos to work on windows but I've only ever heard of the opposite).
>>
>>27175910
people have a right to privacy as well

>>27176031

You do have privacy. Nobody's kicking down your door to watch you look at porn, they just know you have porn available.

>>

>"if x happens then y will definitely happen no matter what"
Obviously
You can't say "we don't know what will happen because it hasn't happened" just like you can't say that the laws of supply and demand don't exist because we don't know that should supply of a good/service increase, people would buy more of that good/service
By passing legislation on virtual freedom/privacy or making virtual freedom/privacy less actual, you are literally making it more debatable
>>
>>27176072
so you'd be ok if fridge manufacturer's knew the contents of your fridge at all times? if dresser company knew the contents of your dresser? if wallet makers knew the contents of your wallet? you have a strange definition of privacy

>making virtual freedom/privacy less actual

Yes? If Whirlpool decides you can't keep beer in their fridges, then you can tell them to fuck off. But if they just know that beer is in the fridge? Who gives a fuck?
>>
>>27176241
so how about if they make this info publicly available or sell it to interested third parties? if you're OK with all of this i have to conclude that you simply don't give a fuck about privacy, which is great for you, but the rest of us paranoid fucks aren't happy about it
>>
>>27175563
The slippery slope is real ffs
>>
>>27176327
It's real, but that doesn't mean it's applicable in every argument
>>
>>27176311
>so how about if they make this info publicly available or sell it to interested third parties?

Ooooohhh people you don't know have the ability to see that you like beer. And Budweiser can also see that you like beer so they send you coupons. Such a scary Orwellian dystopia we're about to enter because Whirlpool sees that we have beer in our fridges.
>>
>>27176392
>nothing to hide, nothing to worry about!
can you just admit that you don't care about privacy so we can end this? it's fine if you don't, no one's forcing you to care, i just want you to admit it
>>
Install Gentoo (or at least some other Linux distro)

I've only been using Linux for years now.
>>
>>27175704
great argument faggot
>>
>>27176442

I care about privacy for things that matter and believe we should only give information to organizations that won't abuse that power. I just think people sound fucking ridiculous when they think they need to protect the goddamn contents of their fridge.
>>
>>27176241
What if you keep your banking info in your fridge? What if you keep your passwords and your social security number in your fridge? What if you kept private corespondence with your family in the fridge? What if all this shit gets leaked to the public because the dataminers are inept morons who cant even make a working video game console?

I mean, if you dont care about your privacy, that's your choice. But you are a private citizen and you have rights to maintain that privacy if you so choose. But Microsoft doesnt care what you choose.
>>
>>27176475
fridge was only one example you faggot, i also said wallet which is undoubtedly going to contain sensitive info, and the original topic of computers which tend to contain our whole lives these days especially for the kind of computer nerds that come here. the contents of my computer is one of the LAST things i want to share with anyone.
>>
>>27176479
>What if you keep your banking info in your fridge? What if you keep your passwords and your social security number in your fridge?

I'm dropping the fridge analogy now because you're legitimately retarded if you actually keep that shit saved onto your computer.

>private correspondence

What the fuck are you talking about with family members that a random stranger could possibly care enough about to do anything with?
>>
>>27176191
Fuck that piece of unusable shit. I'm a normie and I don't give a fuck about privacy. They can do whatever the fuck they want if the system works, is easy to use and doesn't require typing endless codes into the terminal just to get my fucking internet working. I was 2 months without internet, before eventually switching to windows. 0 regrets. Same fucking thing goes to android vs ios. get a new android, or an iphone. nothing fucking else.
>>
>>27176535

The wallet example os just as bad. Knowing that you have a credit card on hand is different than knowing the credit card number, expiration date, security key, and billing address.
>>
>>27176392
>government in charge of information
>some middle aged women handling information systems
>get hacked or leaked
>personal information of millions of people now in hands of people with malicious intent or in the open
Luckily that's never happened before and we can trust the government with more personal information.

Luckily you won't care if your name is leaked as one of those racist sexist who posted something sexist online and get a call to your employer.
>>
>>27176766
>Luckily you won't care if your name is leaked as one of those racist sexist who posted something sexist online and get a call to your employer.

Luckily I'm neither racist nor sexist. Luckily that's not a legitimate reason to fire someone if it doesn't influence their behavior at work.
>>
>>27176350
nigga, the erosion of digital freedoms and expectations of privacy since 9/11 is pretty much -the- standard case for a slippery slope working as intended

>>27176900
>Luckily that's not a legitimate reason to fire someone if it doesn't influence their behavior at work.
do you not live in a right to work state? where i'm at, anyone can be fired for practically any reason as long as it isn't against the ADA, or for prejudiced reasons. even then, one can likely get away with prejudiced reasons by simply saying it was due to something else.

there are plenty of folks being fired for things they've said online or done in their off-time, even though they don't impact their behavior at work. why do you think that whole "We are sorry for what so-and-so did/said. Their views do not reflect those of our company, and they are no longer working with us" dealio happens?
>>
>>27176900
>Luckily I'm neither racist nor sexist.
The crux of the issue. It's like when normalfags say "just be yourself" or "say whatever comes to mind". They genuinely mean it as good advice because they're just such normalfags that themselves are acceptable and what they think is just simple little thoughts about netflix or some shit. Feminists push anti-hate speech laws because they know it won't ever affect them, only people who offend them. Nobody gives a fuck about workplace discrimination against men so women love more discrimination laws.

Increased spying:
1. Is demonstrably ineffective at stopping terrorism
2. Is not effective in stopping crime (FBI worked years to stop CP distribution and ended up arresting a handful of idiots who were completely ignorant of technology. They took down sites that came up a couple hours/days/weeks later.)
3. Is a waste of money and resources
4. Opens up a huge amount of vulnerabilities to attack (Military and Police can't stop teenagers in Pakistan constantly leaking everything from addresses to Pension, banking and medical info)
5. Gives frightening power to secretive agencies completely unnecessarily
6. It's anti-freedom and anti-privacy

It's so retarded it's on par with saying we need to have clear houses so we can look in and ensure nobody is housing meth labs in their homes. The only reason the situation is this way at the moment is because ignorant people vote for politicians and laws that give an aura of authority and credibility to this nonsense.
>>
>>27177146
>do you not live in a right to work state?

He's probably just a NEET and doesn't actually know what the fuck he's talking about

Guys seriously.
It's Windows 10 actual Spyware or some conspiracy shit? I'm thinking of downgrading because that's what everyone is saying.
But besides that I like it. The layout is manageable and I got used to it after while.
>>
>>27178023
It's not a conspiracy. Microsoft found out that no one except for your grandpa actually buys Windows so in order to make money they figured they could give Windows 10 for free (since people would get it for free from torrenting anyway it's not really a lose) and collect all information they possibly can about you in order to make money through advertising.

What business does Microsoft or anyone else have with the contents of your computer if they aren't going to abuse that power one way or another?
On the other hand, you shouldn't have to constantly prove your innocence when nothing has occurred.

There's nothing wrong with Windows 10 at all. It's MUCH better than Windows 7, too...significantly faster, easier, and GREAT for gaming (I'm playing Candy Crush right now, and the graphics are incredible!).

Windows 10 is also supported (unlike Windows 7 which is a 10-year-old operating system), so you'll be safer. A lot safer. No worries about ransomware, for example. You'll also have much superior privacy as Microsoft monitors everything you do to make sure no intruders can get into your system.

Absolutely every reason to upgrade!!!
