This was back in '09 or '10 I wanna say.
Friends and I used to go to the big Imsomniac Events (EDC in particular, back when it was still at the LA coliseum). We avoided the smaller raves and shit because we weren't that hardcore into the scene, we just liked a place to listen to music, grind up on chicks and do drugs.
But one friend and I decided to go to a smaller venue/rave, forget the promoter, they probably don't even exist anymore. Anyway, we were walking by a circle of people crouching near the stage, locked arm in arm.
I didn't understand what the fuck they were doing, but they all stood up really fast. I guess it was one of those things to lose oxygen to the brain. I don't understand why ecstasy isn't enough, why you gotta nearly pass out on top of the drugs, but I heard this fad felt really good or something.
One kid lost his balance, fell back as he passed out and smacked his head on concrete. Went into convulsions and died right in front of us.
Didn't know he was dead until I went on PLUR life (a rave forum) the next day, though.
