I've only ever seen three anime shows before- Kill La Kill, FLCL, and DBZ.
I know that I should watch Welcome to NHK and Cowboy Bebop, but I'm really in the mood for some raw escapism.
Can you recommend me the essential/best romantic/cute girl anime shows that are relatable for robots? Just some really comfy, robot friendly, preferably feelsy anime?

Right now I'm watching Genshiken, which is slice-of-life about otaku pretty much. I really liked the 1st season, the 2nd had a little more romance and such in it so you'd probably prefer it. Personally I hate the romance shit, especially in anime, often crosses the border to ridiculous, Toradora as some other anon mentioned here is one of my pet peeves, but if you're into that stuff then you'll probably like it. If I had to pick something from the romance department, I think it'd be Maison Ikkoku, because it's a lot more subtle, altho 4235143615 awkward misunderstandings can get tiresome.

The show is huge in Japan; its cultural influence is really big desu. The Japanese Military actually plays the song, and after the Nuclear plant accident, there was a movement to conserve power to help the government deal with it named after the operation to collect Japan's power to kill the fifth angel. It is probably the best known anime in Japan, really. Which is impressive when you consider it has less run-time than a single season of something like Game of Thrones in the US, for a comparison.

I highly reccommend this OP. Even after watching SoL for practically eight years now its still one of the best because it has a steady progression. Try the manga too its really good.

I honestly found the Toradora main character WAY worse.. he chases after pink-haired-grill the entire show even though she kept turning him down every time, and completely ignores Taiga romantically until like, the last 3 episodes.

Really, the criteria was probably more for cultural impact than for what is best (since the latter is hugely subjective); however, most would probably put Evangelion pretty high on the list, and it is undeniable that, in terms of economic and cultural impact, it is one of, if not the biggest series out there. I mean, compare it, on a per-episode value basis with something considered popular here, and it would probably get BTFO'd.

I actually liked the characters other than Tada, who kept making mistakes over and over and fucking shit up for himself. Other than that I thought it was a really good anime, but if Banri hadn't been braindead the anime would have gone in a very different direction and I suppose it would've been even better.
