You have to text back quickly enough to keep the conversation going, but not so quickly enough that she gets desperate. My technique back in high school was to text back and forth for a few seconds, then forget about the conversation until she got angry at me for ignoring her the next day.

A girl I know did the same thing, sometimes not responding back for a couple hours. I messaged her that I was going to put her name on my phone as mom. She was angry (apparently, she was laughing when I was talking to her irl, but she said she was angry) and so took my phone from my own hands and deleted her number off of it. I was just being cool and was like yeah sure but I said my charm would make her want to text me and she scoffed at me.
A couple days later, she texted me asking me what notes I needed (I asked her before she blocked me) and I told her but when I saw her irl and brought up the text and how I texted back but she never replied she didn't do so because she thought I didn't send the message, and better yet it was because she still unknowingly had my number blocked from her phone. If I never brought up that I texted her back she would have legitimately thought that I didn't text her at all, which when I brought it up she said it's ok and to not worry about it.
Afterwards she asked me where I was going and that I can't be around her because she really needs to study for a physics quiz, and then she said that she doesn't like seeing me spacing out and shit.
I'm telling you man, I don't know if there's any hope or not, I just don't know.
