Given the size of the universe, it's not unlikely for life to exist elsewhere. Especially simple lifeforms similar to bacteria. Intelligent life however (i.e. a conscious being capable of communicating with us or even traveling here) is extremely rare. Just looking at Earth, we are, to our knowledge, the only species out of millions that have this level of intelligence and it has taken several billion years of evolution to produce us.
