Some people want the receipt to look at how much there total was, or individual price of items.
Others collect them for tax reasons or business expense.

I just take a picture of it with my phone and auto upload it to imgur. Then I leave it on their counter.

The only reason they ask for #2 pencils is that they erase easily but still make a dark enough mark. The machine's not doing intense chemical analysis to verify what kind of pencil you're using, it just sees that the box is dark and checks it off. You could probably use a pen or a fucking crayon if you didn't give enough of a shit.
