How do they feel no guilt or shame? I don't care where it's going. To the few places like hospital care and whatnot is fine, but an enormous percentage of my earnings are gone because the government wants it.

The rage is unfathomable.

Yuros got it even worse.

In Sweden in the 1970s, there was a famous author that wound up with a marginal tax rate of 102%. Something like a regular insanely high socialist top rate, with a flat 15% added on for being self-employed.

Taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society.

You want your roads paved and you want clean water piped to your house and safe food on your supermarket shelves. You want schools and you want police and you want fire fighters and you want the military.

Some of it gets used for things you don't care about or things you don't like. That's unavoidable in a plural society. Some of it gets wasted and some of it gets misappropriated. That's unfortunately a consequence of human nature.

There are a lot of problems with any government structure, because those structures are fundamentally composed of human beings, each of whom is on some level a slave to their individual desires. Even with all its flaws, we are still greater than the sum of our parts and government can still be a great force for good when its purpose isn't being perverted.

https://www.nationalpriorities.org/budget-basics/federal-budget-101/spending/
Not much of it goes towards utilities. It's mostly welfare (mostly for old fucks who need to die already) and the military in the US at least.
>>
>>27052084
a.) depends on what state you're in. California has its own income tax with a top rate of over 11%, on top of federal taxes. Some states have none.
b.) depends on how much you told your employer to withhold. If you get a big refund this tax season talk to whoever in HR handles that and ask to adjust your withholding. Ideally you'd get a refund of as close to zero as possible.

>>27052138
It's true that taxes are an injustice that we put up with because it's the only way we know how to provide public goods like roads and defense. It's also, however, perfectly right and proper to demand that the minimum possible be taken from you to provide such essentials, and not more.

>>27052201
>taxes are an injustice
They're really not. Nobody likes having money taken from their pockets, but it's a fact that to live in a modern society and not some third world shithole they are a necessity. There are still ways to lower your tax burden like retirement account contributions and other credits and deductions.

Fun Fact: Social Security and Medicare cost several hundred billion dollars a year more than defense does. Also about a third of the defense budget (which is about a trillion dollars) is actually entitlements - pensions and medical care for veterans. The actual spending on active-duty soldiers, bullets, tanks, ships, planes, bases, and such, is closer to $600 billion, out of a ~$3.5 trillion federal budget.
>>
>>27052504
A large chunk of that is paying for medicare and social security. So you're also paying for millions of old people to not die on the street of exposure or flood hospital emergency rooms as they die of disease.

>>27052586
I can walk or drive to any place I want to. I can't drive 100mph on the freeway, but I can do 70-80 just fine. The roads aren't mine alone, and in order for them to function for everybody we all agree to follow some standards of behavior. Freedom doesn't mean "fuck everybody else, I do what I want." You want a car, that means you register it and verify that it is fit to be out on the roads. It means you have to drive in a manner that reflects the fact that your actions risk more than just your own life.
>>
>>27052586
>As long as I'm not causing harm

except for when you buy a vehicle from someone and you have to pay taxes on the amount you paid for it, plus "what its probably worth", as well as new tags and plates and whatever else the state claims you should be paying so that your vehicle is dubbed "legal".

Roads and bridges are built and maintained and you use them for free. Would you prefer every road were a toll road instead? That way you only pay for the roads you drive on. You've also got to pay for auto insurance.

If that's too unfair to you there's always the bus, or you could ride a bicycle. Those are much less expensive.
>>
>>27051878
Do you know what streets are?
>>
>>27052857

>>
>>27052857
Most money that goes towards transportation infrastructure comes from the tax on gasoline. A tax on consumption. The more you drive the mote you pay. Their is no reason for my Iowan car registration to be $50 when my friend paid $5 in Missouri and their roads are just fine even with a lower gas tax.
>>

Every week that trash collectors just drive by my house and just laugh at me and yell, "nice try, poorfag," as they drive by without picking up my trash. Then the cops bang down my door because all the trash piling up in front of my house has given them probably cause that I'm poor. I tried to go to school but they turned me away because of all the patches on my clothes and the visible dirt cloud at my feet.

40 hours a week on the minimum wage would put your effective tax rate at less than 5%, and if you're less than full time it means you probably qualify for things like the Earned Income Tax Credit, even if you don't have any dependents, which will probably bring your effective rate close to 0.

>I don't know what anything you just said means.
I have no idea how to respond to this. How do you even function? If your income is low, your tax rate is going to be low. If you're making minimum wage, unless you're got multiple jobs working 60, 70, 80 hours a week, the taxes that you actually pay are going to be very low.

How do you even file your taxes? Even using software like turbotax or whatever will suggest ways to increase your deductions like taking advantage of the EITC, which is literally a tax credit for being one of the working poor. If you're single and make around $14k or less, you qualify for it and you get some more money back on your taxes.

If you're poor that also means that you can get a credit to pay for part of or the entirety of your insurance premiums, depending on what kind of plan you pick. You just need to enroll through the healthcare marketplace, which takes about 15 minutes on the website.

That's because you don't bake or sew your taxes. Do you not have parents or anybody who raised you?

Unless your employer has you as an independent contractor, they most likely withhold a certain amount of your paycheck for social security, medicare, federal, state and possibly city taxes. At the beginning of the next year you file your taxes for the previous year. If you're poor, it's very likely you'll get a rebate, which means that more was withheld from your paychecks than you owe for that year.

If your employer does withholdings on your paycheck and you're a poorfag, go spend $30 or whatever it is on some software and file your fucking taxes and get some money back. Even if you're classified as an independent contractor or whatever your shitty employer might do, you still need to file a tax return if you make more than $10k a year or whatever the minimum is. Go look it up on the IRS website. Your filing deadline is normally April 15th, but this year is the 18th because of a federal holiday mucking up the calendar.

>inb4 Warren Buffet
He's wrong too. He's just playing politics because no matter the tax rate he's already made more money than he could ever spend.

>but muh capital gains tax
Yeah wow, I get taxed at a lower rate on the sale of stock that I purchased with my after income taxed dollars. So fortunate. Totally doesn't drive up risky investments knowing I have to factor in a 15-20% haircut when I sell them.

>but muh vesting options
This is legitimate but I'd take cash over stock desu senpai because then I could choose to purchase that stock.

I wish taxes were voluntary. Imagine a system where you could pay for the stuff you want and not pay for the stuff you don't want.

Then no one would pay for healthcare until they were sick, no one would pay for the military unless we were at war, etc.

Now that I think about it, that isn't a terrible idea.

>Europoors will never understand.
Most nations in the EU were kingdoms of some sort in the past. The modern democracies developed from that root. This gave the ground for that raging boner for big nanny governments in Europe.

I better start practicing then.

People would have to pay their medical bills, just as they have to do right now. As for security forces and the military, there is a constant need for a standing army, but the amount of money thrown into the United States Army is just insane.

lol

I really wouldn't mind paying for a lot of government. I think I'm mostly just upset about perceived waste. I should get more politically involved if I care that much, but the truth is I really don't so they can continue to fleece me because the system is 'good enough' for now.

That's why I don't like universal healthcare. I may have let my body go to shit, but that was my choice and no-one should have to pay for that.

Our military should be big enough to allow our technological development to be better than the second best country, and it should be big enough to ensure that shit like what's happening in teh south china sea can't happen. Any more than that, like our current military, is completely asinine.

This is why general funds are a bad idea. They're always mismanaged and over spent. Taxes that are collected in direct correlation with the use of the service they provide/cost most people have no issues with.

Like hunting licenses help pay for ranger salaries and park preservation. The people that like to hunt don't mind (usually) chipping in because it shows the state they value having pristine wilderness and state parks.

I don't mind donating to my kid's school.

Or turnpikes fees (public or private) because I use that road everyday and I don't mind paying for it because I value it.

But if I don't use the road, then I don't pay for it so I'm also content.

The issue is when you just take an arbitrary amount from everyone just because and put it in a giant bucket and wonder why it's spent so terribly. (ala Social Security).

It's because there's a big disconnect between the people supplying the money and the people spending it.

We have universal healthcare and I sure do see the benefits. However, it turned out to be a financial burden. We are performing expensive surgeries on people way beyond their 70's, just because the hospitals can make a profit out of it. With the increasing number of elders, this will bring our medical system to it's knees.
