Your effective pay rate would be $9 per hour.
Things look even worse if you make say $15/hour working full time somewhere.
Bust your ass, work 40 hours, pay your taxes and at the end of the year you've only made 10K more than the basic income !

Other than city/gov workers most people get a pittance of a raise every year if they get one.

Personally I feel that benefits should decrease over time (small amounts) to motivate people to get a job of sorts and that to compensate over all benefits should go up.
I mean, it takes a person ~6 months to get back on their feet after a job loss, so for those people some 700 cheque just isn't going to cut it.
As for benefits decreasing, lets say it stays at $1,000 per month for 12 months, every month after that it decreases by 3%, so you lose $30 per month.
People will be notified of this when their benefits start and 6 months before the cuts start.
Finding a job shouldn't automatically kick them off ontario works, if the job is part time the the decrease just happens at a faster rate, if the job is full time and pays a decent rate then the benefits are cut with an even sharper decline.
