What are you r9k's "resident expert" on?

The comprehensive history of blink-182?
Vietnamese literature?
Woodworking?
Basketball?
Sly Cooper 2?
Moe anime?

Any topic that you could confidently say you know more than the average person about.

Post your expertise and ask eachother questions. Who knows, you might learn something.

Look up the PF Tek for basic information, then spend a while on Shroomery seeing how people actually do it. I could run you through all the steps here, but doing that will help you more than I could.

Essentially, you need to pressure cook a substrate in glass jars to sterilize it, inject spores from a syringe, let them colonize, then birth the cakes into a chamber which you can keep at a certain temperature and humidity, and that's all there really is too it.

it's possible for anyone to learn, but some people are more naturally inclined to it

Not him but I am also a programmer. It's actually easy to get started. There are free online tutorials, compilers for all the most popular languages. Pascal and Java are good ones to start with. The mask is a thematic recurrence in Nolan's trilogy. It represents anonymity and a rawer form of humans that are typified by their seemingly simple yet deconstructed one-dimensional characteristics, like Batman (justice), Scarecrow (fear), Joker (insanity) and Bane (brute strength).
If you look at the literal reasoning within the film, Bane wears the mask to keep him supplied with painkillers to overcome the trauma of the injuries he suffered in the pit. Here again we find that he is driven by pain, which is alluded to in the dialogue in the scene.

I seriously can't understand any reason you would ever try it. Shitty high and physically dangerous. It's not something to do a handful of times a year, it's something you shouldn't be doing at all. The color of the typewriter in The Shining changes several times, and the window in the manager's office simply cannot exist spatially within the hotel. There are many little things in the movie that would be seen as continuity errors, like when Jack is talking to Shelley, a chair in the background disappears when it cuts to Shelley and back to Jack. These are all most likely intentional because Stanley Kubrick was obsessive about getting the frame just right. He wanted to give your subconscious a feeling of unease through slight errors that you probably didn't notice.

In The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke actually cut open his own forehead to be authentic to real cutting in wrestling.

In Trainspotting, the shit in the "Worst Bathroom in Scotland" was actually chocolate.

In The Big Lebowski, Steve Buscemi fails to get a strike only in the scene preceding his death. After he fails to get a strike, he touches his arm and gets a confused look on his face. A numb or tingling arm usually precedes a heart attack.

Just to add onto this, the only scientific use for this drug is simulating psychosis in animals. Silent Hill 2.
I have beaten the game and gotten every ending at least 2 or 3 times each. I love it so much, I know every enemy, I know the lore, I know the design influences, I know quotes straight from the designers about why the monsters look the way the do, I know the character and the voice actors. Not only that, but I've watched the Two Best Friends playthrough of the game maybe 8 or 9 times all the way through now. I can not only quote the game, but I can quote them. Often times I'll just leave it on so I can listen to it while I go to sleep, as it drowns out my own thoughts. It is a lot like a song that you've heard a million times- you don't really know all the words, but if you start saying a few, the rest just kinda comes out naturally. I also get really frustrated at the two parts in their playthrough where they really struggle with puzzles.

*deep inhale and exhale* Mary, could you really be in this town?
*walk outside* In my restless dreams, I see that town... Silent Hill. You promised you'd take me there again someday, but you never did. Well, I'm alone there now, in our 'special place' waiting for you...

*music* I got a letter, the name on the envelope said Mary, my wife's name... it's ridiculous, couldn't be true. That's what I keep telling myself. A dead person can't write a letter. Mary died of that damned disease three years ago. So why am I looking for her? our special place... what could she mean? This whole town was a our special place. Does she mean the park on the lake? We spent the whole day there. Just the two of us...

Could Mary really be there? Is she really alive, waiting for me?

I often see people post here claiming they're smart yet can't into maths, though smart people aren't lazy, & you must be lazy to not into maths considering it's comparable to learning a foreign language as the knowledge builds upon itself, becoming more interesting at the comprehension of greater equations. Programming is not far different, I'd imagine anyone with avg intelligence & common sense could grasp both. Great autist robot hobbies/jobs when you already sit at the computer all day desu.
>>26998196

Jack of all trades master of none? I've had some cross-discipline myself, but there's not a requirement for a tonne of different languages in which I'll become rusty once they're irrelevant to projects.
>>
>>26998919
>Jack of all trades master of none?
Definitely. I didn't want to do full stack, only backend, but I got forced into it because I'm a beta robot who gets stepped on by normies a lot, I ended up doing all their work for them. So I wasn't actually any good at frontend.

Not everyone's intelligence is geared to math. For example, I was a child prodigy and taught myself to read and write from comic books at the age of two. My IQ was rated at four sigmas, which means it's higher than 99.997% of the population... but I'm shit at math. My natural skills run to language and pattern recognition rather than numbers, which involves entirely different areas of the brain.

I'm willing to bet I know more about philosophy than anyone on here.

Of course my areas of expertise don't cover everything.

I'm mostly an expert in various topics in history--Early Modern/Kant, as well as Ancient. But I am most likely better versed in the rest of the history of Western philosophy than anyone here.

I'm also quite knowledgable about logic (include philosophical logic, philosophy of logic, history of logic) and some topics in metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language and mind.

I know a bit about ethics, but most of the stuff I am familiar with is work in moral psychology, philosophy of action, practical reason etc.

Anyway, that's what I know.

Philosophy is already one of the most interdisciplinary subjects there are. There's lots of collaborative work being done between philosophy and linguistics, law, mathematics, computer science, biology, some theoretical physics, political science, etc. Honestly I think that some of the humanities--particularly English and comparative literature, where a lot of poor work masquerades as 'philosophy', could use exposure to actual philosophy. Plus a lot of what historians of philosophy do can be collaborative with what people in classics, history, and history of science do. I do think philosophers could learn a lot from some of the social sciences, for instance anthropology, but they don't seem to interested in talking to them at the moment.

Outside of academia there are lots of philosophers in think tanks, policy, hospitals--every hospital has bioethics people. Really it is useful for any field that requires critical thinking (which is less vacuous then it sounds), but it isn't a very 'applied' subject, so I don't want to overstate how useful it is in the private sector.

I do think that far more people should study philosophy either in university/college or high school, because it is obvious we don't have a population that has been trained how to think very well and critically evaluate arguments etc.

>mythology, memory, language, sexuality, and perception.

CJ Cherryh, particularly her Wave Without a Shore.

One of her main themes is "alienness"; she likes to invert this by having the humans be the "aliens". Language is also important to her, particularly the idea that languages shapes thought (Chomsky?), and biology shapes language.

Also, as conventional choices, Sturgeon and Dick. Tiptree if you like being confused.

>>27000717
i agree, my limited exposure pretty much only consists of an intro to logic class, which i was already somewhat familiar with anyway, having worked with formal boolean logic quite a bit
we do certainly need more of a general critical thinking framework, so many people can't see bad argument as such, and if they can it's usually just recognition of some well-known fallacy like strawman or ad-hominem, as opposed to actual failures of logic like denying the antecedent or affirming the consequent

I find the mindset of a Samurai very interesting. They were an elite warrior class when viewed from the outside perspective, were nothing but killing machines serving their respective lords. If you look at a Samurai from their perspective, they exist simply to continually better themselves and understand the world through the mastery of all things; not just the martial arts or swordsmanship.

Many Samurai would become artisans in various fields unrelated to combat simply because they knew how to become "better" than themselves from honing their swordsmanship. A famous example is Miyamoto Musashi who was not only undefeated in duels, but would also become a master of the tea ceremony, painting, and a somewhat accomplished writer.

They would accomplish these things by doing one thing at the beginning of their journey: accepting death. If you can accept that you will die one day, you have nothing to fear and you may as well do your best in everything since you only get one chance.

One famous quote that always resonated with me was "To know ten thousand things, know one thing well." If you understood the importance of various movements during Katas or different sword strokes, you might be able to discern the importance of the differing strengths in brush strokes in a painting since the movement of a sword and the movement of a brush are both actions birthed of your own will shaped by your experiences and practices.

I probably sound like a massive weeb, but I think Samurais are the coolest fucking shit, man.

I've played FFXIV. I'm too spoiled by XI in it's golden days to enjoy XIV. The verticality of gear progression really puts me off, especially when they polarize the game by making 95% of the content facerolleable and the raids a simon says memory dance game that you have to go into with other poopsockers because normal people can't handle hitting buttons in the proper order AND moving and dealing with mechanics at the same time.

And if you do find a group who can do the top tier raids, all of that new gear you just got will be worthless a week into the new patch when they drop the new welfare gear for shitters.

It's just a different game for a different audience, imo. If I hadn't played XI back in the day, I would probably be okay with XIV.

It's an alright game for your first MMO if you've never played an MMO I guess, but I feel like MMOs as a genre are on their way out. I haven't really seen an MMO in recent history that does anything radically different other than the standard formula, with the exception of Eve. I think I'm a bit too late to truly enjoy Eve though.

You can teach yourself. But don't expect perfection.

The way I did it was transcribing pieces. When I was a kid, I used to fuck around on Game Maker and I wanted to use all these cool soundtracks but it didn't support MP3, so I'd sit there and transcribe them into Anvil Studio to make MIDI files.
Shame that I lost my best ones.
