Stay away from the banks mutual funds, i made that mistake and they absolutely kill you with fees.
You need to open a brokerage account. Many banks have their own, so its probably most convenient to you to use that, but there are discount brokers that usually have lower fees. In canada questtrade has no fees when buying etfs but i use cibc investors edge because i can transfer money easily between my accounts. In the US I know TD ameritrade is popular.

Uni covers a pretty wide spectrum of people so that's good. If you have decent social skills but you're just unable to apply them to talking to girls you have a good base to work off of.
