When I am mowing I imagine I'm playing a lawn mower simulation game, and the various lawns I mow are the courses in the game.
You're scored on speed, accuracy, and aesthetics.

>points deducted for gaps and streaks, spraying the side of the house or vehicles with grass
>points awarded for pleasing spirals around plants and neat corners.
Don't hit sticks or roots, you will lose points and your lawnmower will take damage! That cuts into your earnings to buy upgrades for the higher courses.
