Depends what you mean by acceptable. I wear it long, some people like it, but I think most people don't. I wear it in a manbun sometimes and people have told me it looks better that way. I've worn my hair long ever since I was a little guy and, in the many intervening years, it's never really been much an issue. I've more or less taken into granted, and I find that the vast majority of people do as well.
