learn to speak first, using the english alphabet phonetically, then go back and learn characters once you have the words and grammar down pat.

I'm actually in the US. My whole family is Greek, and my dad didn't speak great English when I was young, so a lot of Greek was spoken in the house, so it's technically my first language, and then I learned English afterwards because I had to go to school and shit and it's 'Murica. So that's how I speak those, and I learned German in high school. I plan to learn Arabic because my step-family is from the Middle East and they speak a lot of Arabic, plus I'm going into the Army anyway so I figure it'll come in handy for that too.
I decided to try learning Japanese (primarily because I'm a weeb, although I can rationalize that as having plentiful listening practice) last week
It's slow progress, but if I can commit to 40 minutes a day then I'll eventually at least feel like I accomplished something.
I've gotta say though, being absolutely wank at drawing does not help with learning characters

English has some Latin influences. Not saying it's exactly like Spanish, but they're not half as far apart as a language like Mandarin or Arabic would be from English. They have a number of similar-meaning words that sound alike, for instance.

Nah, you could paint with shit on concrete and you could still join. It'd be sort of like a motivation thing: you have to upload a picture of something, anything at least once a day or two or something. It'd be to help people with committing to learn how to draw.

I don't really think threads will work here the same way they do with /a/. It's a board dedicated to Japanese media, so understanding the language is something that a lot of the people who browse it want to learn. I don't think drawing threads will last long enough on here.

I'd be damned to visit Russia due to the barren wasteland it is. Korean would be nice if it wasn't for the sudden advancement of NK recently, so who knows if South Korea will exist in the near future. German would be cool but the chancelor is a crime lord shill and the Syrian refugee thing. French is a meme language. I'd wait for the zika virus to die down before Portuguese. Italian isn't very useful anywhere. Iranian and Arabic are languages I'd never hope to speak, but likely mandatory for Europe in the future.
Japanese, Mandarin, and Spanish seem nice, but, I'm not a weeb nor want to do my trades and business in China. Spanish might be nice to visit Spain, The Dominic Republic, and whatever else.Thanks for reading my blog
