I could probably deal with this being the worst period in recent history: afterall after great disasters people tend to come together to help one-another (e.g. the great depression) -- but this is a disaster on a psychological level as well; everyone feels nothing but apathy for their fellow man, there's no light at the end of the tunnel, no hope to be found.

Here's some information on this topic that you obviously don't know about:

-the main focus of the NSA is to prevent terrorism, assuming you are not a terrorist, even if you are committing crimes using the internet, the NSA will not be the ones to deal with you

-the NSA only looks metadata of calls and email, they CAMNOT just read them or listen in to your embarrassing conversations with mommy

-if you don't support the NSA, you are either a terrorist, or someone who wants to get bombed because Muhambangaladash Ali bought fertilizer and a pressure cooker online

Anything would be better than this empty life of isolation i live now no matter how much money i have, how safe i feel and how i have the internet to occupy my time. I have finally realized the love/family/friends being the most important thing meme to be right. I support the idea of the NSA but if you think the absolute vast majority of what these intelligence agencies do online is justified, not morally but just effectiveness wise then you're absolutely ignorant and probably computer illiterate.

They take so much money, they gain so much power and they barely accomplish anything besides setting up programs that drain money. You just have to look at the real stats of what's being accomplished. Contrary to popular stupid internet opinions, the government isn't some evil blob trying to ruin citizen's lives, it's just a big and diverse mess of bureaucratic crap. We don't need some drastic change in politics, we just need to fix what we already have.

People who think this is a simple issue are retards though. It's like people who say the TSA shouldn't exist because there aren't people doing terrorist attacks on planes any more. They neglect that attacks on transport are still happening in countries with shittier transport security. You have people saying that tactical police units shouldn't exist... because someone may fake a perfectly legitimate sounding call. There are NO easy fixes to these problems.

The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of surveillance is avoidable and only negatively affects the ignorant. The primary problem I have with society is having my information in government systems just because they're so susceptible to leaks. Just look at how many military members had their info leaked by some "ISIS hackers" a while back. All it takes is one sympathic muslim, angry with his day job to start personal info of citizens to whoever. The government is such a large system it's just inevitable that there's going to redundancies and corruption.

What I'm scared of is when technology becomes so advanced it's just impossible to avoid. They already have near-impossible to see microphones that transmit sound to somewhere else. DNA, fingerprints, databases of information, tracking people through phones, hardware and software bugged/ with backdoors straight from the manufacturer.

It is a pure inevitability that people will become sardines packed into cities, all of them named and numbered and recorded. All their actions tracked. Cameras recording everything. The pure inability to opt out of society that we're seeing the beginning of now. No individuality. People farming essentially.

Now THAT is something genuinely worth fearing. It will happen though.

Sometimes I think I fell into a coma in 1999 and whenever I see Gwen Stefani on a magazine cover or an ad for JNCO jeans that's a brilliant young scientist trying to remind me what year it really is so he can bring me out, Inception-style.

I mean, everything since the Millennium seems to grotesque and unreal. Like really hamfisted speculative fiction. Are we really outsourcing one of our last remaining productive sectors and source of middle class jobs to the Indian subcontinent? Are we really telling struggling college grads that they should have become welders? Did we really spend trillions of dollars on liberating two countries only to make them worse? Have we really gotten to the point where a mass shooting is simply forgotten about in a month or two?

It's like a sick joke or something.

Let me give you an analogy from Australia.

In Australia (as in many countries), before systems like iMessage, when everyone was using SMS - all these messages were being routed through the computer systems of the major phone companies. Now the government set up legislation to allow police access to this information at any time they want. The police are also then able to look up the address registered to the phone and get in contact with the owner.

Now this led to a MASSIVE abusive of this information. There were hundreds of thousands of instances of data being accessed, and samples of the queries submitted regularly showed very clear abuse - police and government agents (including welfare dept. workers) regularly looking up details on people they knew, on celebrities, in some cases police and government workers were found to be stalking people with these details.

This wasn't even the actual messages, this was just metadata, the police had to get a subpoena to read the actual content.

Can you imagine the abuse that's possible with the actual content of messages???

Besides, the core issue is that information in itself never harms human life. I as a human being have the basic moral right to have my communications regarded as private by default, except in the case perhaps of extraordinary specific evidence that I might be planning something significantly dangerous or criminal.

These agencies have NO MORAL RIGHT to this information, and considering they've already shown huge disregard for people's rights (hacking the PERSONAL Facebook accounts of employees of Huweii and other phone companies for example, to obtain information on encryption used in the phones), or mi5 collecting video from thousands of people's webcams without their knowledge - why should any reasonable person want to just "trust" them?
>>
>>26714462
>Brave New World's society at least made sure everyone had access to sex and jobs

While at the same time robbing them of what it meant to be human

>What we're heading towards is Camp of the Saints/Mad Max/Idiocracy

At least this world is badass and fun
>>
>>26714256
I disagree but this is the very important point to bring up

Many people don't have a problem with the NSA, they have a problem with the system itself. They don't agree with the war on drugs, they don't agree with intellectual property, they don't like capitalism, they don't agree with the war on terrorism, they don't think people should be punished for looking at certain types of porn, some of these people (anarchists and libertarians) don't agree that the government should even be a thing or don't think the vast majority of what government does they should even be doing.

When you have people who start from this perspective then obviously they're going to condemn absolutely everything that the government does or anything bad that happens in a system they don't support.

>>26714474
The whole thing is pretty overblown. Companies must retain metadata for 2 years. That's not a big issue. Google retains most information almost indefinitely but that just slips under the radar for the average idiot complaining about his privacy online.

People complain about 'muh gubments spying' yet spread their personal info wherever they can online. Watch the south park episode "Let_Go,_Let_Gov"

>The whole thing is pretty overblown.

You can say that all you like. Snowden's exposures have shown that the NSA:

-Targetted for spying individual politicans at the highest levels of government in democratic, western countries and allies of the US.
-Spied on people using WoW and Second Life
-Collected information on the sexual preferences of people in various political groups (not groups classed as terrorist organisations), for the express purpose of using it as leverage
-Collecting data from millions of users who were not under any suspicion of a crime, real data and messages.
-Conducted espionage and stole secrets from various international companies
-That employees of the NSA were spying on love interests
-That the NSA has been conducting espionage and spying to crack encryption codes, this involved hacking the personal facebook profiles of individual employees of various companies
-The NSA is trying to build a framework that allows courts and police more and more access to this information.

Actually I think this is the best time as long as you live in a major city in the West.

We are at the pinnacle of civilisation, probably 50-100 years before it inevitably crumbles just like every other empire.

The fact that we aren't getting money and pussy is our own failure, not because it's not out there. For Chad and Stacey it's easier than ever.

We live in an age where you can order drugs and gourmet meals delivered to your door without having to even talk to anyone.

The collected knowledge and culture of humanity is available for free, instantly at any time. You can be safely transported almost anywhere on the planet in a matter of hours for a pittance. You can talk to anybody, anywhere instantly for basically free.

You're free to live whatever lifestyle you want, achieve anything you're capable of.

What more could you possibly want?
