The southern trans-con (the freight line that goes roughly from New Orleans to L.A.) is getting increasingly tight with security. I rode the hi line (chicago to seattle) last year and i did get busted once (because i was really stoned and sleeping when we pulled into the crew change) but i did 5 days in jail which was like the max that they could give me. Train hopping is usually charged as 2nd degree trespass which is a misdemeanor and most DA's don't even want to throw the book at you because they want you to get out of their jurisdiction. tl;dr don't worry about getting caught a few days in jail isn't so bad

I met a lot of friends along the way and the feeling of liberation is great. Riding the train is beautiful, as you get to see the country side of the US from a very chill perspective. If you road trip or ride the amtrac or bus you aren't going to see the same sights. Also you can literally trip acid while on a freight train and watch the world go by. Some people who freight hop are cool...a ton of them (especially the ones who get strung out in cities) are shit people...and i just avoid them mostly. I would say it is definitely worth the risks. I am trying to be less homeless though..getting kind of ridiculous at this point.
