It actually doesn't matter if it's still within a standard deviation of average IQ since we're concerned here with the IQ compared to other occupations, not to the average IQ as a whole. What we see, based on these stats, is that not only is the average IQ significantly higher for those in STEM fields, but more very intelligent people go into them. This is what tells us that the STEM fields are full of intelligent people in comparison to other fields. Nearly a full standard deviation above average IQ, IS quite significant, by the way.
The original point wasn't that engineers are socially awkward therefore smart people are socially awkward. The point was that social awkwardness is MORE common among intelligent people than normal people, and STEM was used to illustrate that, because STEM represents the height of intelligence and stereotypically socially inept.
