i work for a pretty well known drug company and a few years back someone set up a phishing site that looked just like our careers page and collected applications, but then asked for money to conduct background checks

No, I always I deals with my friends that we all list each other a professional references then upsell to whoever calls us.At least that's how it worked in highschool. I haven't had contact with any of those guys in 5+ years
