I guess it depends on whether you're the type to watch TV all day or sit at your PC all day. I default to my PC. Had consoles all my life since the family PC was trash, now that I can afford more than an old $50 thinkpad I love it. I'm playing games way, way more since I can just ~start a game~ whenever rather than shifting over to TV mode. I can even tab in and out super easy plus emulators etc which I haven't even gotten around to yet because there's just so many games to play!
The reliability of Valve / Steam and their digital media vs. physical media does scare me a little. I've 'bought' digital copies of games before then had my rights revoked or the game removed with nothing I could do about it. I've heard a lot of horror stories about DRM and people getting banned and losing their entire library of games. It's just taught me to buy low and keep a wish list rather than a back log so even if that happens at least they're all cheaper games I've already played a lot than money straight wasted.
I just don't understand spending that much on a hobby. That's a ludicrous amount for something that doesn't benefit you in any way (besides wasting free time, perhaps).

Every time I look at it, I feel happy knowing that I can enjoy whatever I want for the coming 2-3 minimum, with 4-5 years being the most likely outcome.
I suffered bad, loud and hot hardware for more than a decade. Aldi tier shit. Always worrying whether I could run a game, getting mad at my browser running like a turtle, not even being able to watch 1080p VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE.
So now that everything runs at 60fps with settings maxed (Witcher 3 for example) makes me happy, happy that for once I have something high quality.

I spent 1k on a PC in 2010 and I'm only just getting around to replacing it now because it's slow. I probably will spend around $1200 this time and have it last a bit longer, but that's only because I want a $400 graphics card.

It's hard to estimate how much I've spent on my PC since I took some old parts at the beginning and slowly upgraded it.. But I bet it's under $2000 and I've had a PC for ~8 years at this point. Most recently spent like $400 on a GTX 970 and new case. But that was like 10 months ago at this point.

Other than that I use it to watch porn and cartoons.
