Not who you're talking to, but LA is like a really shitty version of New York or Chicago. By far the worst part is the sheer amount of urban sprawl but no public transportation. The majority of LA is like the world's biggest suburb. Look at the photo you posted: there's like six skyscrapers and the rest of the "city" is just spread out all over the place. Also: weed shop, sex shop, tattoo parlor, weed shop, sex shop, tattoo parlor, weed shop, sex shop, tattoo parlor...

There's literally hundreds of buses, trains, subways that go everywhere and you uber/lyft anywhere for cheap.
Also LA is bigger than just downtown and includes various different cities, most of which are affordable.

That's less than two minimum wage checks now that it's up to $10 an hour.
That leaves you with around 800 or 900 for yourself, and you can get a part time too if that's not enough. It's even cheaper living by yourself, what the hell are you on about.
