How do I convince a therapist to give me Prozac/fluoxetine?
I literally went to my primary doctor and said hey I wanna die most of the time and he immediately wrote me a prescription for Prozac. It didn't help at all but it's not hard to get

All I did was tell my doctor that I've been depressed for a long time and think medication is necessary. Then you can say you read about "x" antidepressant and would like to try it. They should prescribe it to you at a low dosage and you'll have to work your way to a higher dosage over months.

I was on Prozac for awhile, never felt a difference. I went to a different psychatitist and got a different anti depressent and man I feel good. This doesn't mean Prozac won't work on you, it's also possible I was given too low of a dosage. The bigger you are the more you need

Prozac and most other anti-depressants are serotonin reuptake inhibitors, what does this mean you ask?
well it means that serotonin neurons can not reabsorb serotonin into their cell membranes via the 'serotonin transporter', this means an increase in extracellular serotonin, that can be used by serotonin receptors.
but depression has not been conclusively linked to serotonin levels, in fact, when deprived of serotonin there was very little correlation with depressive symptoms.

instead, there is now 'believed' to be an indirect effect of SSRI's on neurogenesis, which is now the leading model of depression.
the neurogenesis theory of depression states that the atrophy of certain parts of the brain, most importantly the hippocampus, causes depression. in order to counteract this, you need neurogenesis, or the formation of new neurons.
Neurogenesis is mediated through brain derived neurotrophic factor, which itself is mediated through the NMDA receptor. this in turn can be modified by serotonin neurotransmission.
so the supposed mechanism is now that serotonin effects NMDA, which increases BDNF and alleviates depression. but, it doesn't do this very reliably, and is often on par with placebo.

one of the primary effects of SSRI's mechanism is 5ht2a downregulation, 5ht2a is an excitatory serotonin receptor that mediates learning and cognition, through bdnf. This isn't an issue while on the drugs, because you have extra serotonin, but after you get off, you start to lack that excitory element of serotonin.

so your best course of action is to take drugs that stimulate glutamate and thus BDNF, many nootropics do this(noopept, racetams), as well NMDA antagonists(ketamine,pcp), which when reactivated after antagonized cause a rapid increase in neurogenesis.

Antidepressants can help but it won't fix your problem. Most of the time the side effects outweighs the positive effects. It only worth it if it's your last solution. People have different reactions to the same molecule. You have to find the medication that works best for you.
