The negative effect is overstated. It made me aware how all people got their personal issues and fears (true even if 4chan anons aren't representative to "normal people") and made me more confident in return.
When I laugh out loud, it's probably because I read a self-depricating or perversion normalizing funny comment on 4chan - it's funnier than most of the web, for sure.
(It's fun with pics of young hot girls, that's basically it.)
The only thing that's bothering me is that the age group keeps centering around 21 and so I'm getting too old and my perspective grows apart from the ones of your standard anon

While i don't like what it did to me in some respects, i wouldn't change anything.
I'm from the middle east, and i was for the most part tasteless as far as most things went. It's specifically coming across 4chan by accident, not just the internet, that allowed me to absorb western culture, and taught me how to converse properly in English. Also i had no one to talk to 99 percent of the time so i always could come here and communicate with people.
Made me a much better person mentally speaking. I wouldn't know 10 percent of what i know now if i never found this place, and i wouldn't be nearly as cultured; all the stuff I've seen over the years growing up, watched, read, etc. Would not have existed it were it not for here.
i wish id discovered this place when i was 12. just thinking of how my edgy little brain would have loved the gore and CP of the early days.

I watched a lot of Anime and a lot of hentai. If you remember a lot of those streaming sites had chat rooms that'd turn on and you could chat as a guest and stuff. I spent a lot of time in those. Eventually someone posted an image link to 4chan and being very interested in where he found that funny image I cut out the 4chan.org out of the url and went there. It replaced those chat rooms for me.
But frankly I don't see why a 13 year old couldn't have found 4chan in a more obvious way. It wasn't that small after all. And it had a wide range of topics.
