There are handful of "serious" anime series that are good or decent, while everything else even worth glancing at is about cute girls doing cute things.
Also, OP, if you watch Ippo, don't even bother with the manga. The third anime production is about where the series stops being good and starts being ridiculously stupid. Gedo is where the shark gets jumped completely.
