It really isn't that hard. You need pen and paper and spacial awareness. But I don't recommend you start with the simple stuff like phong - brinn shaders. I recommend you go to YouTube and search for raymarch tutorial. He explains things rather poorly but you copy that shit. And try to understand a little bit. Just the single sphere case perhaps. Search the same thing again and there's a there's an nvscene talk where a guy explains a lot better than the other guy, he explains a lot more, and it's not really as focused on raymarching as it is on designing. Get his code from the description, you can use it in shader toy just fine (he has a few utility functions which you might assume were opengl API, I did that mistake). It gets you hooked I swear. You then go optionally go to www.pouet.net and find the raymarching tutorial thread and read it. Ignore the tutorial post. It's fucking awful apparently made by some mensa moron (makes you question the IQ scale, seriously). But read the entire thread and theres pretty good explanations that helped me get through it.
Then you should probably have realized what you're doing. You can then try shit out. If you need more understanding the there's a guy referred to as IQ in the community that has a site that's really good and explains stuff like making shadows work etc.

You can also look at other people on shader toy. It tends to be hard to get into the fancy stuff immediately but you can hop around and see many many different levels of shader. I recommend doing fractals. That's where I actually started with my learning. Perhaps you should too perhaps just to get familiar with the idea of what a fragment shader is (your code is run for every pixel on the screen is probably all you need). Iirc I followed a tutorial on the opengl wiki. It had a tutorial for shader toy Mandelbrot set. It's pretty. Especially the LSD version.
When you get raymarching you can probably expand more into other things. Raytracing is a simple concept as well but I find it has more overhead on you as a newbie. And really every shading feature is usually a simplified form of a Raytracing algorithm. It's either conclusions drawn about the results that can be made quicker or its fudging (making shit up that looks ok). Computer graphics is fun. And when your through this you're already past second year CS students (game programming students) at my university. Estimate all in all to reach the level I presented here you can do it in a week if you're dedicated.
