Back in 2007, my aunt, along with 22 other missionaries from a Korean Christian church, was once captured and taken hostage by the Taliban while doing missionary work in Afganistan. The Taliban demanded the immediate withdrawal of any Korean troops stationed in Afganistan, and to the Afganistan government, they demanded the release of all Taliban members who were currently imprisoned. Out of the 23 people who were taken and held for ransom, two people were executed within the course of a week while the Korean government continued negotiations with the Taliban. In the end, an undisclosed sum of what could only be guessed to be around 4 mil~ 10 million dollars was payed in exchange for the remaining 21 prisoners.

Also, my uncle was once a popular singer in the 90's. He was only a one-hit-wonder though.

What was important about 9 months before your birthday that always had your parents shagging?
>>
>>26152718

I was born on the 24 of June, St. John the Baptist's day, a holiday in Quebec, my home. My name is Yanik, which is the Breton language diminutive of the name "John". In Lithuania, the 24th is celebrated as Janis, which is their form of the name John, but also, coincidentally was the name of a Pagan god, whose festival was celebrated on solstice in pre-Christian times.

A lot of coincidence. My Grandmother had the same birthday

/r9k/ will literally never believe this but... I was in a fairly successful, early 2000s British indie band and had a record deal. I still receive royalties, my last cheque from PRS was for a whopping 1,230 pounds

Good times though. I also played in another British band who went on to have significant success. I left sometime before they were eventually signed however

Out on a boat, never set foot in country, Manila, Bangkok, Tokyo yeah, but never in the Peoples Republic of
We had , A/C , hot water, ice cream, movies, better at sea than in the mud with bullets and bugs, did two cruises to help the war effort, I was a volunteer rather than a draftee, stayed in for 30 years active, then 10 more reserve, retired in 2012, was on a carrier for Desert Storm, lots of work then, flight opps around the clock, then for reserve duty got pulled back in for a couple of trips in support of Afghanistan and Iraq, then later the War on Terror, saw guys get blown off the ship, planes roll into the sea, plenty committing suicide, saw all the social shit got to hell with gays and women, when I left the even let HIV + sailors stay, from letters weeks old to email and Skype a lot has changed, same with society, tons of changes, not all for the better, music has gone into the toilet as far as I am concerned, glad I grew up in SF and got to see some of the greatest bands ever to play, war really sucks, but it made up a lot of my career, I ended as a Master Chief Petty Officer, got a Sociology Degree with my GI bill and now work for the National Park Service as a ranger, I will probably stay until I am 70 and then travel and see all the places I never got to in the service, never married and have no kids, I'm pretty sure, been a pretty good ride so far, I am in great health and am looking forward to another 40 years or so, had a couple of 100 year olds in the family so the odds are pretty good, enjoy the time you have, you can look back on it, but you never get it back

I'm a multiple synesthete. My most prominent and vivid form synesthesia is ticker-tape, which means I basically have a mental dialogue box or closed-captions on. When people speak, I see text. Yeah, I have the typical stuff. Numbers and letters have colors. But also some kinda strange things, like weekdays or months having colors. Also I have this strange way of visualizing code in my head(I'm a programmer) as a colored streams of liquid representing different branches of the program flowing in the code, kinda hard to explain. Might even be unrelated, but still pretty neat.

I genuinely enjoyed this shitpost.

9.7/10, you don't see dedication like this everyday.

Mike B/ Dr. February?
>>
>>26157591
It's more like the internal hallucination. I get the same thing when solving equations for example. I just see what's happening. I see the code static, but not as text, more like a plane where through certain areas the "data" can pass. And then when I see a code written on the computer screen I can visualize for some input how is the data gonna flow, which paths is the "data" given into it gonna take and where it's gonna leave and in what form. It's really similar to water flowing, but the water changes colors with each branch(condition) it takes and I can easily tell what's happening to the data because I see when and how it changes colors.

I mean all programmers probably do this in some way. Many use pen and paper, I just never found pen and paper to be enough to express code.
>>
>>26157703
That's neat as all hell. I don't really know much about coding, but that sounds useful as fuck for what you do.

When I was around 10 years old, my parents had way too much money that they didn't know what to do with. Apparently my dad was somehow making like somewhere between $300k-$500k a year (the number always changes every time he brags about it).

My 'rents knew I liked to draw comics, so they enrolled me in a drawing course at the local art college. Everyone was older than me, there were like 17-year-olds there. We were supposed to design our own character, and some side characters too. All the other students could draw really well, they were making like these really well-drawn superhero drawings. I drew this really rudimentary carrot with little stick arms and legs. I named him Carrot Man, of course. His best friend was this cheese guy, who also had stick arms and legs. They both worked at a nuclear power plant, just like the Simpsons, because I was 10-years-old and didn't have many bright ideas. Anyways, the teacher announced that there was a contest that she wanted us all to join. The winner had their work displayed in an art museum. I submitted this picture of Carrot Man and his cheese friend (I guess his name was probably Cheese Man or something) standing in the grassy lawn in front of the grocery store. Everyone else had these really detailed drawings of superheroes fighting villians or flying around buildings or stuff like that.

I'm sure you know what happens next. I won the fucking competition. My parents and I took a trip to the art museum, and I've never since seen them be that proud of me. I had a case of the 'bergers (early signs of schizophrenia are indistinguishable from autism), I didn't have a lot of friends, and I wasn't really good at anything, so seeing them proud of me for the first time felt really weird, kinda uncomfortable.

So my parents started thinking of me as a retard savant. They'd ask all the time if I was practicing my drawing, and they'd want to see the crude comics I liked to make. I guess they thought I was gonna grow up to be an artist or something. Meanwhile, my artwork went on a tour through art museums all over Massachusetts, even being displayed in a big one in Boston. I guess my drawing was like "outsider art" or some artsy-fartsy term like that.

I don't really know what those curators saw in it, it was just a fucking carrot and some cheese, both with stick arms and legs sticking awkwardly out of their food bodies. I suppose I am in no place to understand modern art. I never found out where that fucking drawing went, and it was never returned to me. I don't think they'd just throw out art like that, would they? Maybe it was sold at an auction for a few thousand bucks and now it's hanging over some rich snob's mantle. I feel like I should've made some money from this, at least a few bucks that I could spend on Lego sets, y'know? I didn't get a dime.

Anyways, my dad's alcoholism spiraled out of control and he got a few too many DUIs and he got fired from his job. We went from making six-figures to no-figures in a snap. Because my parents are so irresponsible with money, they didn't save up any money at all. I really have no clue how they managed to spend at least $300k a year on... they didn't think to save up even a tiny bit of that? Honestly, I would have rather not gone to that drawing class and gotten the thousand or so dollars they spent on that to pay my rent for a month and a half.

So yeah, that's the story of my rise and fall as a brief "art brut" fascination all over the Bay State, with my juvenile drawing of a couple of friends who happened to be vegetable and dairy products. Now that I think about it, there was like a third character who was like the Squidward-esque person of the three. I forget what kinda food he was.
