A lot of it is assessing the situation. How comfortable is this person right now? Do they want to talk to me? Do they want to talk to anyone? Are they going to start screaming if someone gets in their bubble?
If you want to make friends in a ward, you have to be able to read people. You have to read who is functional and willing, and who is not.
