I've met Vaughan Jones a few of times and he's an interesting guy. He has little time for bullshit or the egos of other mathematical bigshots, and when you talk to him he's more interested in talking about non-mathematical things like kitesurfing than in hearing about your research project.

PhD student at Auckland. He comes to visit once a year and give a short lecture course. Last time was a few weeks ago about Thomson algebras, and the previous time was about knot theory (of course). Talking to him when going out drinking or whatever you get the impression of an otherwise ordinary kiwi guy who is nevertheless in possession of an enormously powerful mind that is always cranking out insights no matter what he's talking about.
