Employers lie all the fucking time during the hiring process, you have to fight back by lying right back to them. Give them the number of a relative or friend who will cover for you and corroborate the story (obviously inform them beforehand of the situation).

I'm not one of the two you quoted, but you're pretty much unhireable with a year+ unemployment gap. So there's really no harm in lying. You wouldn't have gotten a call back with a truthful resume, but lying at least gives you a shot.
