While I prefer to drink vodka neat, try and replace it with a coffee rum or plain coffee. You really shouldn't be able to taste the difference. Also, if you get a chance, try it with Van Gogh vodka. It's absolutely delicious.

When I was a kid I didn't know how cocktails worked, so I just mixed random alcoholic drinks together without caring what I was doing
I ended up creating a drink which consisted of 4 shots of lager and 3 of vodka. I had two of them and spent the next few hours literally pissing out of my mouth

Different bars make different drinks better or worse. Ask the bartender what he recommends or likes to make etc. If you're at a bar where a mixed drink is when they pour the beer into a mug for you then just get a beer and a shot.
