I think it works like this:
A square is defined by 4 straight 1D lines.
A cube is defined by 6 2D squares.
A hypercube is defined by 8 3D cubes.
Whenever you look up a representation of a 4D hypercube, you can always find 8 3D cubes within it, albeit deformed. This deformation is due to the projection of the 4th dimension over the 3rd, the same way the perfect 2d squares of a cube look deformed in perspective.
