You have grown accustomed to seeing your mirror image. When you see yourself from other people's perspective you see the asymmetry because it's the opposite of what you're used to seeing. In a manner of speaking, people see you the way you see yourself in the mirror, because they are used to seeing you that way. Try looking at someone you know in a mirror. They will look weird.
Extra detail is great at showing flaws. It's why old photos or image filters that soften everything make people look younger/better. Unless you have prime genetics / bone structure you're going to look bad when a HD camera is pointed at you.
