This isn't 1997. Anime has been mainstream for an entire generation now.

I see people walking around campus wearing attack on titan t-shirts and shit like that. Not even neckbeards or anything, either. Normal looking people.

A cultural club screened a Miyazaki film alongside French art films and a Mexican documentary during an event last semester.

Anime isn't a niche thing anymore. It's as accepted as video games for pretty much anyone under 30.
