I had long hair too and I got a head shaver and cut it all low as possible like a soldier.

Spend the extra money to go somewhere nice (not great clips). Just tell the hairdresser that you'd like to get short/medium and allow him/her to choose a style that suits you. If you go somewhere nice enough, you have nothing to worry about and you'll have a good cut that fits your face.

long hair: looks bad if low maintenance, can look really good if high maintenance
short hair: can look good both high and low maintenance, but not as good as long hair
I've cut my own hair since I was 15, and I just do a standard 1,1cm on the sides, and keep the top hair between 3 and 6 cm.
Just find the lines on the sides of your head, cut alongside them and constantly apply water to keep the sides separated.
