I always give back gifts and won't accept - though greatly appreciate and tell her so - her paying for events etc., but I think it's a very admirable trait.
It seems quite uncommon though, overall men tend to be much more likely to offer such things to even acquaintances or friends already (think buying drinks or rounds within a group, for instance), while in my experience and what I've seen around me women don't. Understandable as they can/could get free stuff wherever they go (easy to get used to that if it happens throughout life), but a pity nonetheless.
My close(r) female friends do seem to have that trait, there could be a pretty strong correlation between having some degree of that trait and having a likable/nice personality - not trying to cruise through life on easymode by "abusing" their advantages and instead themselves looking for people who will like them for their personalities and all.
