Because they have literally no other interests in their pathetic drone lives and since so many people are into it they think that it's a good way of fitting in.

Big companies often seek players among their workers because they have company-wide championships between teams consisting of people hired in certain areas.
If you were good at the sport you could get more time off, let yourself go etc. in your workplace.

I only like playing hockey and cycling. Watching any sport/TV in general makes me want to off myself, I have no attention span for that shit.
