When people are treated like minorities or their behavioral freedoms are threatened, they manufacture a false sense of pride and reinforce that behavior to spite the groups / authorities that are trying to repress them. It's a basic survival instinct. Maybe if we didn't have politicians and religious groups calling for the criminalization of homosexuality, gay pride wouldn't exist.
But being the short-sighted idiots they are, these very groups and politicians only try to use gay pride as further ammunition in their caricaturizations of gay people and their "agenda," not realizing that they're only fueling more psychological reactance.
