Can we get another redpilling major/career thread?

Is biology a meme major? Is there any way to make it a non-meme major (with a minor or specific path)

Not a meme major. Take biochemistry and genetics courses and get lab work in that area.

All majors are meme majors if you are a robot. you need connections+normie personality to get a job in any field nowadays.

I can fake a normie personality. Maybe not Chad-tier but convincing enough.

Why is electrical engineer unbelievable? I'd always thought mech. engineer would be in the god tier too.

I'm starting school this spring and am torn between electrical and mech :( they're both practical to use at home, but even with connections and internships, how's the job market like for both?

Totally depends on internships. I know a guy with a 4.0 in EE who is about to graduate with nothing lined up. I also know a ME who was told it doesn't matter what GPA he gets his senior year, he was guaranteed a job starting at 80k (I think, can't remember exactly) because he so impressed them during his internship.

>>25464521
BME are a lot more competitive after getting a MS because the BS is too general. Keep this in mind when making plans. It also depends on what you're interested in because the major overlap between the two is in prosthetics. I would recommend ME if that's what you like.

>>25464609
It's pretty easy to get lab experience if you go to a research school. I live in California so the University of California are our research schools, while the state schools are more about getting your degree then a job.

> that moment when you realise that everyone In these threads are underage

I switched from bio because I hated lab work (got a lab position with a professor), it has horrible job prospects (unless you go into bioinformatics), and I was starting to hate the material itself. In my lab one of the grad students got her masters with a very novel and influential paper, did tons of lab work in undergrad too and published as an undergrad, overall high prospects, even knew coding which is a huge plus. Now makes like 10 dollars an hour in a shitty town doing basic lab work in a field totally different than what she studied. Not worth. The only thing you can do with a bio degree is med/dental. Even bioinformatics wants a CS degree, not bio
>>
>>25464542
Just one thing, I don't believe you on the job outlook. Post proof.

Bls reports a 9% increase for human resource managers for 80k but that ain't shit compared to civil engineering with 12% with over 100k a year

Why doesn't /r9k/ just study what they like instead of following what others think is right?

We get all these robots all riled up on electrical engineering, medicine, computer science and they fail it because they have no motivation.

If you like the subject so much that you're willing to spend 4 years studying it, then do it. Otherwise, what's the fucking point? Just study up a trade which takes less than 4 years.

civil engineering is good because it's easy, but because of that a lot of schools require a high GPA for acceptance. If you're coming from high school this should be no problem but if you're a literal retard like me and had to go to community college, transferring can be a bitch.

If you think that studying the humanities is a waste of time, you are a fucking pleb and philistine.
>duurr STEM are the only disciplines worth studying
It's like you actually believe that the exploration, preservation and propagation of culture and literature do not matter.

I am of the opinion that you should only choose what you like doing, and that you can excel in everything as long as you have a passion for it.
It seems to me that diehard STEM advocates are those that are incapable of doing anything else, and are butthurt as a consequence. If you have enough self-esteem to enjoy your own field of study and appreciate that of others, then you have no reason to embarrass yourself by projecting such a limited mindset.

Three years of my life will be financed by an academic consortium, meaning that I'll be living rent-free and maintenance is covered, as long as I don't indulge in expensive habits.
Also, after the probationary first year, I'll be teaching undergrads, meaning I'll get payed on top of that.

If you can't afford four year school, if you did mediocre in high school, go to community/technical college and major in something you can apply for employment like an AAS or A.S.

>wants to be a policy analyst
>plans to take a trip on the trades path to get there.

Doesn't sound like a good plan. I have a political science degree and did something s similar. I took a few auto shop classes at community college on the side while taking accounting and some other classes. This was after earning my BA (graduated with honors) and living the neet life for too long. I stopped taking them because I dont care about cars that much, the work sucks (lots of older mechanics are forced to retire because their bodies give out and they end up spending the rest of their life living on pain killers and disability pay), and the pay for most mechanics sucks. At least I can do some work on my own now, but there is no way I would want to do that work all day everyday.

My advice would be to repair your GPA and much as you can before graduating (do well in your classes, I dont care how) and get an internship (many places want their interns to have a 3.0 or higher).
>>
>>25468766
>I'm a senior in my last semester of high school

What he should do is learn a 2nd language and go full expat mode, start a new life somewhere else. Maybe teach English to kids in rural china or something.

for instance, the place I studied at? It was originally a polisci minor, now it's become a POLITICAL STUDIES (kek) major, and if I want to transfer over elsewhere it'll cost a lot of money

like the other guy said, I'm into my mid-20's and by the time this is sorted out I'll be nearly 30. I don't know what to do and every option seems bad in my life. It makes me very unhappy

He'll need a degree and certs to teach English.

I basically did that minus the whole finally getting a job and moving abroad thing.

You really screwed up by doing poorly in school.

I don't know where you went, but I went to a fairly liberal uni, and the papers I wrote weren't something a leftist would love. Your arguments have to be rooted in fact and not feelings. Little liberals in training often get a pass on this because what they say appeals to the prof.

3.0 poli sci grad here. The only options for us include more school. Either dual major or grad school. I'm in grad school now. You need to really kill the GRE with a low GPA like that, so start studying now.

Your options are either law, public administration, public policy, city planning (what I'm studying), or try to shift gears to another field of study. Keep in mind each program will have different requirements, so look into each option closely.
>>
>>25470649

biology is worthless unless you want to go to med/dent/vet/pharm school. bachelors in biology is a one way ticket to $12-15/hour lab tech jobs on permanent temp contract without benefits status. a masters in biology means you MIGHT get to manage those lab techs. a phd in biology means you waste 7 years of your life studying shit no one cares about for the grand reward of spending 4-6 more years doing post-docs before, if you're incredibly lucky, landing a tenure track job at some small shitty university in the middle of no where. a morel likely scenario is you do a post-doc, burn out, desperately try to land one of the few industry jobs available.

Yes, I worked in a bio lab for a year and all the grad students knew they weren't going to get anywhere in life but were too far in it to stop. Ask anyone far along in a masters or doctoral level bio program. They know they're fucked. Only field that has a chance is bioinformatics but that's more comp sci
>>
>>25472516
you're delusional if you think that the average grad student in any field of study publishes results that are important. most of it is just low hanging fruit that your advisor suggests because it's better to publish low hanging fruit than it is to research something difficult, hit a million dead ends, and ultimately have nothing to publish or defend when you're 7 years deep into your PhD.
>>
>>25472572
it's also true for chemistry, and physics, to a lesser extent. studying hard sciences is a fucking dead-end waste of time at every level, from undergraduate to doctorate.
>>
What about Biotechnology?
>>
>>25472704
Not sure how biotech is, I know bioinformatics is the best field in bio right now though
>>
>>25472704
probably a meme degree, too. my guess is that most companies don't need a biotech specialist and so there will be very few job openings -- those openings will be almost exclusively in biotech cities like boston or san francisco, and those cities will have their local targeted universities from which they recruit. those companies will also want someone with at least a masters degree, preferably a doctorate. a bachelors in biotech is at best a feeder degree for the horrible meat grinder that is graduate education.

make friends with upperclassmen in your major and keep tabs on them once they graduate. the ones that don't go to grad school and try to stay in science with lab tech jobs, etc. will be making shit money. the ones that go to grad school will be making shit money for the next 7 years of grad school + 2-4 years of post-docs while working 60 hours a week. and then if they're EXTREMELY LUCKY, they'll get an adjunct professorship that maybe pays $30k/yr for another 5+ years before they can even dream of landing tenure and promotion to associate/assistant/junior professorship.

I know a few guys who did computer science and electrical engineering. Top tier schools here in Canada, too (Waterloo and U of T). These were the cockiest cunts before and during their degree. Now one guys tells me 40% of the people he graduated with haven't found jobs in the field (it's been a year and a half). Some went into more debt for Masters. Sucks for them, guess the bar got raised.
>>

i have a bachelors in math. thought i wanted to be a doctor so i applied to and was accepted to med school. hated it and dropped out after a semester. can't find work with my bachelors because, surprise surprise, a bachelors in math is absolutely worthless. im going to start a masters in accounting in august, with the goal of getting my CPA and working in public accounting.
>>
>>25473124
How old are you now? I was just gonna ask that to though about math lol. I don't even know what kinda jobs you can get with a math degree. I was thinking about accounting and one of my teachers recommended accounting but I imagine it would be fairly boring.
>>
>>25472973
You'll be fine. Just study hard. Comp Sci has a high dropout rate as it can be very difficult at first.
>>
>>25473226
im turning 27 in july.

math can be an okay degree if you want to teach. it's also good if you want to study statistics or double major in math and computer science. the degree on its own is worthless. if you stick with math, for the love of fucking god make sure you do as many internships as you can.

desu ive only taken one accounting class, and that was in high school. i need a career-track job because i cant take menial wageslavery with no hope of promotion for the rest of my life.

from my limited view of accounting, parts of it are boring, yes. some of it is engaging and the larger picture of it all -- the language of business and such -- is interesting.
>>
>>25468328
I'd say engineering has about 20 years left of decent job-finding and earning potential.

They're planning to massively raise the H-1B cap. It's currently at 65,000/year, they want to bump it to 115-300k

https://www.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/senate-bill/169

>Immigration Innovation Act of 2013 or the I-Squared Act of 2013 - Amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to establish an annual cap on H-1B visas (specialty occupations) at between 115,000 and 300,000 visas depending upon market conditions and existing demand. Sets forth allocation provisions.

If this won't pass, they'll ram it through in some other bill

Also, look at the top of that chart - Chemical and Energy. Commodities suck right now, oil is dead, yes it's cyclical but still, Aerospace is very highly dependent on government funding.
>>
>>25473384
Yeah I also took one accounting class in high school my last two years. I feel exactly the same way about your last point, though. My dumb fear of it is being some boring job where I'm stuck in a room filling out ledgers all day.

>>
>>25473492
do whatever you state requires to become CPA eligible and sit for the CPA exam ASAP. work hard, get a good GPA, and get a job in public accounting. it can be tedious and the hours can be shit, but it's supposedly a lot more exciting than lower-level industry accounting. then you either have the option of staying in public accounting and working your way up to senior management/partnership, or leaving for higher-ranking industry positions. depending on how many years you worked in public accounting, this can include assistant controller, controller, CFO of small/mid sized companies, etc.
>>
>>25473617
yeah but i have no interest in actuarial work and i've heard the job market for junior actuaries has tightened up significantly over the past 5-10 years.

well one of the things I do which I enjoy a lot is reconciliation, ie going through our various sheets/statements to make sure everything matches. if something is off, figuring out exactly where that discrepancy is, what caused it, how we'll fix that in the sheets, etc. I'm good at it, feels just like a puzzle. I definitely get why people would think it's boring, but there's a lot of different sub-sets for accounting. Also, since the work I do is very much factual and logic-based, I rarely find myself second-guessing my conclusions. It just all makes sense to me and I actually feel confident about what I'm doing, which is a nice change...

lmao just got a degree n biotech don't listen to >>25472798 they have no fucking idea what they are talking about

Just before I graduated did 3-5 interviews A WEEK.

It looks good as fuck on a resume, because it's new

You get trained to use the newest biology machinery.

BIOTECHNOLOGY is literally what computer science was to the 70s.

If you make a successful drug, instant 100million+ dollars if you pick something worth it.

Creating a drug can cost 1billion+, but investors come quick, if you have data backing you drugs.

My first job over 50k full benefits.

I am in a major city, but not san fransico or boston, stay in a big city, and you will be fine plenty of job offers, it's WWWWWAAAYYYY better than biology.

You literally can take anything in nature splice its DNA, and literally create new life that never existed.

Biotechnology is probably the best degree that is out right now,

If you open your own biotech company, which is essentially just different pieces of lab equipment in a room, ( you might need a clean room, which is hella expensive, depending on what you make) you can pretty much guarantee you will be a millionaire, and you can make more than doctors.
Make antibodies, ferrari at a young age.
