Who here /meditation/?
I don't do it that often but when I do, I note marked improvements in my cognitive functions. That is to say, I can focus better afterward. It's a small bonus but every bit helps doesn't it.

It's not easy I'll give you that. Take some stimulants like adderall, methylphenidate or hell even caffeine will work, first. Makes it much easier to maintain concentration.

I already have. You cannot consciously unfetter your mind; this is an inherent contradiction. The more you are conscious of your thoughts, which 'meditation' has been advocated and designed to cause, the less your mind is free to roam to spot, for instance, novel properties of the text you are working on: for instance, to notice that it needs a whole new run-through with respect to punctuation, possibly automatized. 'Meditation' only helps with focus in the sense of dumb perseverance, where your mind is fettered and clings to a mundane task such as of a human calculator: 'this plus that plus that minus that times that times I wonder what if WHOOPS my mind just wandered back to the task this plus that minus that minus that plus...'. As soon as your task is open-ended, however, for instance, to judge a book (with respect to many factors, such as quality of binding, of ink, of weight, ...), 'meditation' backfires.

It, of course, doesn't work like that. First, the thought to do that is conditioned as well, and second, the effectiveness of the wandering is impaired anyway.

I used to, I found it to be quite helpful with composing myself and being able to function in a given environment that required me to in a top mental "condition".

In the face of intentional refusal of the academia to study adverse effects ('meditation' and 'mindfulness' *is* a huge business even if it weren't a religious practice), second best things such as interpolation, analogy, and studies with less reliability need to be used. Of course, you are going to arbitrarily dismiss those, because you don't realize that they are essential to scientific method already.

That said, sure, a handful of studies have managed to slip through. You just need to see through the superficial redefinition: reduced mind-wandering as 'focus', decreased standards as 'creativity', self-absorption as 'self-awareness', things like that.

The question is whether I want you to cry out your blanket 'insufficient! biased! flawed!' or not.
