I feel like 4chan also appeals to the "plays with fire" sort of people. People that want to psychologically challenge themselves.
Horror games and cringe pics are a more tame way of doing this, but on 4chan it's like a shitstorm of truth, degeneracy, feelings, and evil.
And it's relatively safe from your end; you don't risk actually dying.
You know those news stories of people shooting up places? Showing their apartment, their lifestyle. There's a thought in the back of your head; "Would I have been able to be around this person? Would I be able to understand them if I got to know them? Is that real degeneracy or are they perhaps 'enlightened' in some way feared by most?"

It was funny along time ago when normies first discovered 4chan and the news did, but now it's old. 4chan isn't a super secret club, and it's 2015 you should know about it by now. I'm amazed so many people still don't know about it or think it's some place for super intelligent cyber criminals. Probably why teenagers are attracted to /b/ in the first place.
I think it's because the internet has become a normal, daily part of everyone's lives, which leads to an influx in normalfags who don't know about "internet culture" I suppose you could say. Circa 2007 or so everyone on the internet knew about 4chan, but the internet was mostly browsed by, for lack of better words, nerds. That isn't the best word to use, but normalfags didn't see being on the internet a lot as normal, only certain people did it.
