Standards of beauty have always been based on the habits of the wealthy.
Foot binding was beautiful because it kept a girl from working, so only a rich girl could do it, although it spread all the way down to the poor eventually.

It's sort of anthropological pomo theory oriented, but basically the modern argument is that it was a "mutilation" in a way similar to modern circumcision, or to the other Chinese ritual of the famous mandarin fingernails, or women wearing high heels or uncomfortable clothing in general. It's in service to some kind of (I'm trying to avoid jargon) culturally perceived important thing, not ideology in the sense of being imposed simplistically, but an embodiment or expression or perceived important behaviours, attributes, etc. In the case of footbinding that thing is mostly daintiness and a complex of other attributes that go along with it - like the fact that it hobbles women and implies they are domestics, i.e. that their husband is able to support a useless dainty woman, therefore that she is able to embody perfect femininity, which therefore makes her more attractive. Another similar thing in East Asian culture (and in fact Ancient Greece also) is skin whiteness. Koreans for example are OBSESSIVE about it, but all Asians are, because it implies you never leave the goddamn house, i.e. you are a paragon of femininity and womanly virtue. Greeks had the same thing.
Another example might be Qing Chinese genuinely freaking out when they have their long hair braids cut, or a bedouin sufi losing his beard. It's not a matter of simple superstition. They have complex associations of virility and so forth. Beliefs like that are not linearly held or simply caused, they are bound up in things.
Thorsten Veblein also talks about similar things in Theory of the Leisure Class. Not quite the same theory but still pic related.
