The Japanese definitely use "anime" to mean "anything animated." For them it's a loan word, they took the English word "animation" and then shortened it to something more natural-sounding to them, "anime," which uses all native phonemes.

I don't really watch anime that much, and I haven't watched any anime in a while, really, but somehow I watched the opening to this show on youtube and it sounded really catchy and cute. I really was feeling for some escapism so I decided to go ahead and watch the first episode without looking anything up for it.
Holy fuck. I was not expecting that twist at all. Call me a pleb, but I honestly don't even want to watch the rest of the series because that first episode was brilliantly done, and I don't think anything the series can produce will be able to top that. It's one of the most shocking plot twists I've ever seen in a series simply because I had never expected that whole twist at the end of the first episode to happen at all.
It almost made me want to start watching anime again.
