You know the price of goods will just increase as a result right? The min wage is Australia is like $17/hr and everything costs a fortune.

neat. $20,870/yr assuming an FT hourly job and no overtime.

that would be $20487 after EITC assuming you are a single male gainfully employed with no other reasonable deductions or dependents. since the taxable income is over the poverty line (by about $9000), you aren't given an adjusted tax bracket.

so the feds, over the course of the year will withhold about 15% of your wage, which is a bit over $3,000, leaving you with $17,470.

then CA state tax withholds about 2% more of the $13426 that's taxable ($4k is the standard deduction for single filers), so that's another $268 off the top.

then theres standard withholding for OASIS, UICT, MedicAid, which total about $1k over the course of a year. that leaves $16,202

now tack on renting a room for $500/mo, leaving $10,202 left.

let's say you have cheap transportation for $1000 a year (public transport, car pool, a motorcycle or completely paid off cheap car), that leaves $9,202

now add in fixed costs like heating, electricity, maybe a phone of some sort for $1500 a year altogether. that's $7,702 left.

add in food for a year, say $1000, leaving $6,702 left.

do you save stuff for a rainy day? $3000 over a year is good for emergency money, so your fun money is $3,702.

how about things like medical/dental/life insurance? say $1000 a year for all of it.

at the end from that $10/hr wage you get $2,702 to spend on whatever you want.

>>
>>25426903
well, shitty apartments in union city or something are $20k a year by themselves.

if you live in someplace like fresno or marysville or lodi you can have an apartment for $1200/mo

basically if you are minimum wage in CA and living on your own and have any desire for savings/investments/comforts then you're working back to back two jobs.

You do realize the higher minimum wage rises, the higher the cost of living will be for that state.

I mean California already had a high cost of living compared to other states and now it will be even higher, enjoy paying more rent for apartments and more for food and what not.

I bet a gallon of milk is like $7 or some shit in California, in Texas we pay like $3.50 or some shit for a gallon, granted our minimum wage is only $7.50.

It's a trade off OP, you'll be making more per hour but everything around you will cost more as well so it all balances out.

It's economics 101
>>
>>25426274
Woooooooooooo more money to tax + inflated prices to compensate for the drones of wage increased = you're fucking making less money now

Good job wagecucks you not only ruined it for yourselves but for everyone else

Beer in California is super cheap and that's what counts. But it makes me think why politicians tax the fuck out of everything yet alcohol is cheaper that water.

Makes me think democrats still think of us as slaves to be honest.

yeah, no. you have too simplistic a view on how business works. wage increases typically grow a business as it's an investment in the spending power of the local workforce - spending power that is spent to buy products.

it varies greatly by market sector, and spending that money somewhere that isn't local is what would "hurt" a business by losing the opportunity cost for more customers in the market looking to buy. in times of uncertainly - where wages are poor, spending is suppressed due to fears of instability and inability to cover essential expenses. with higher wages, people are less stressed and more likely to spend.

additionally, historical data for wages and market spending (since 1933 i believe) show largely little correlation between the earning wage of an employee and the success of a business with a solid strategy for their products.

You could just as easily say that higher wages will make everything cheaper and more abundant because company management will have to reduce their expenses and optimize themselves to serve the greater demand and greater options for the proles.

Economics is a flawed model based on a very crude, very silly representation of reality that assumes everyone has perfect information, is perfectly rational, is perfectly responsive, and takes advantage of every opportunity. And it sloughs all that requirement for superhuman ability onto the people doing the actual work all day i.e. wageslaves.

It's mystical voodoo always interpreted and calibrated to fuck the wageslave. That's why you should join a union.

Milk is only ~$4/gallon dude, chill out. Although I do dislike the "livable wage" meme

How could any reasonable person expect to be able to feed their family with a no-skill minimum wage job in one of the most expensive places in the world? I don't think even a $15 minimum wage would satisfy some of these people. In Los Angeles you need to live a glamorous life with all the luxuries or else you're a nobody. Everyone has an iPhone, everyone has flat screen TVs, everyone goes to sporting events and buys expensive shit all the time. I enjoy fancy stuff but living needs to be a priority. I'm not going to live month to month just so I can have a new smartphone every year

I'm never moving out of my parent's house. Not until I'm at least 26 or I can move out of state to someplace cheaper. It's just a waste of money otherwise

Uhhh... what? That's exactly what companies and banks do. They hoard money and sit on it. They don't "create jobs" with it.

Reminder that when companies had free reign they worked people 16 hours to death in coal mines and didn't even pay real money. They paid you Disney Land money that you could only spend at the Company Store.

If you earn money from wages, the capitalists want to fuck you. So own a business OR join a union, but realize you are antagonistic forces.

"Labor advocacy" or "theory" from the right is just a big ruse to fuck you out of money if you work for a paycheck.

OP again. What a lot of you fail to realize is that we're finally starting to catch up to where wages should be. In the 1960s minimum wage was the modern day equivalent of $10 / hour. A $10 min wage is nothing revolutionary, if Reagan and the boomers hadn't fucked up the economy so badly min wage would probably have risen significantly higher than $10 / hour.
>>
>>25427203
>with higher wages people are less stressed and more likely to spend.

where is this money supposed to come from? Do they just print up the extra dough in their basements to pay their employees?

No, the government will have to increase money supply in circulation if they don't want an increase in unemployment or for production to decrease.

WIth increase in money supply, aggregate demand increases, which then increases the price of goods (aka inflation). So yes, prices will go up.

By default, with more money in circulation, you will have higher prices

>>
>>25426689
ummmm nope. commodity prices are determined on a global market. things cost what they cost based on materials, inputs, and transport. competition forces prices as low as possible. what you're talking about would necessitate collusion, only possible in a few markets large enough that you could simply shop OUTSIDE the city from the same brand.

tldr ur dum

>>
>>25427611
>be American

>>
>>25427746
>inputs
an employee's wage is a part of the cost of doing business - it's factored into the cost of the product and directly impacts the ability of a business to derive revenue, and thusly profit, from the sale of that product.

a business that arbitrarily increased employee wages that also exists in a highly competitive market will fail because other businsses will offer the same product for cheaper and gain market share.

it's a choice to be competitive or to be marginalized. some companies can spin their small market into a niche where their high employee wages and their product are built not directly from the product but on the brand, on the customer's willingness to pay the higher price for the perception of higher quality or greater value. you see this in many luxury goods for example, but also in many service-oriented industries.

also holy shit, since when isn't it a better idea for the company to fucking fire the moron paying above market wages and hire a manager that can pay just enough to retain people, but not one cent more to remain competitive and return the best profit for investors?

maybe he thinks employees can't invest in anything and have to live on a paycheck alone?

>>
>>25428033
sure, lemme just pull a higher paying job out of my ass. i'll put it beside the rare pepes and girlfriends i stacked to heaven as i build a ladder to normalcy.

not saying that "get a better job" isn't possible, but if you're making minimum wage in CA in an expensive area it is incredibly hard to keep money you have in order to increase your purchasing power. you either must be desired and valuable to hiring companies and for people that aren't desirable for whatever reason, are poor now and will remain poor.
