The ability to select a wine is the best way to tell the unwashed masses from people who come from a good home. It doesn't seem like digestifs are such a thing anymore, but I still respect someone who knows to bring out something good after dinner.
I was visiting a friend in germany once and before diner he brought out schanpps. I held my autism thinking it was some stupid euro thing to do everything backwards only to find out schnapps over there are fucking delicious and an aperitif in yuropia. They aren't sweet like what we call schnapps, they're like what an american would call eaux de vie. He had cherry and peach. They were about 20% alcohol and very intense, like biting into the fruit at the peak of ripeness straight off the tree.
Alcohol is one of mankinds greatest achievements, and I believe it is the entire reason we went from a nomadic to an agriculturalist society.
I wish I could not want to drink. Sobriety seems objectively superior if you can be happy without alcohol.

Back when I was drinking I'd spend most of my time in bed fucking around on my laptop while I was drunk.
Back in highschool I took this course on drugs and how they impacted the brain through a local college during the summer between my junior and senior year.
The course was free- it was funded by a grant from some anti-drug outfit. I believe the thinking behind it was that if kids understood how drugs worked they'd be less likely to take them.
I started drinking and became an alcoholic shortly after so...
But I do remember from that course that alcohol acts on your dopamine (same neuro-transmitters that cocaine works on) a little initially but then it hits your opiod receptors (much like heroin or morphine but less intense).
It was that second bit- the drowsy, slowed down warm feeling that I really fell in love with.
I wish I could drink forever with no negative consequences, no outside world to interrupt me.
