Just watched Altered States. Beyond The Black Rainbow did a better job with similar ideas. It's all interesting stuff but by going overly technical and providing a conclusive ending they killed the fun. Open endings work better for movies about crazy speculation, that's the same reason nobody remembers Contact.
If you're an anime guy have you seen Wings of Honneamise? That's another example of what I mean. Contact and Honneamise are very similar movies but Honneamise took a grounded idea and left the thinking up to you while Contact took a fantastical idea and laid it all out, spelled it out to you repeatedly and then wrapped everything up neatly. Contact might have gotten money and a positive reception but who cares now?

i can approach people when i feel like it's appropriate, but if you do so when it isn't, it just makes you look creepy, and that's the problem really. i pursue solitary interests, so it's difficult to meet people outside of work and school.
i've gotten people's phone numbers before, but i don't really know where to go from there, and i never talk to them again. there really isn't any context to text messages, so it's hard to initiate a meaningful conversation.
i've tried calling people out of the blue and coming up with some excuse to justify it, and the call some kind of context, but it's just so contrived and awkward.

Honnemaise is fantastic. I love the buildup to the MC going to space. Laying it out like an impossible feat, having the whole nation doubt them, and all their hard work over the movie, makes it so satisfying and magical when they finally make it to space. The rape scene confuses me a bit though. Would any woman forgive a man who tried to rape them? I get that she was a holy woman and he was under stress, but still.
