Who actually likes Undertale here, and why (not)? As one of the most peculiar games released this year (or quite some time even), I feel like we could have a good thread about it.
I personally like the innovative gameplay elements Toby put into the game, but that's just the technical aspect. I think he did an amazing job at creating a persistent story that makes you appreciate all the effort you've put into the game, even after starting a new playthrough.

Story, gameplay, and music are some of the strongest things about Undertale. I actually had feelings during some of the endings.. That being said, I think the fanbase is pure autismo-cancer, and the graphics are pretty meh. I recommend playing it, but not getting involved with the fan base online.

It's very good, but massively overrated and for entirely the wrong reasons.
The characters are pretty flat, although they each get one or two good moments- but the game isn't about them. They're only obstacles, and they're standing in your way.
The deeper investigation of vidya, the "deconstruction" if you will of the classical RPG formula, went clear over everyone's head.And the fan boss fights are way better.

Anyway, just started playing this game today, wanted to see what the hype was all about. It's ok. I like the story and humor a bit, I don't enjoy the bullet hell shit though. Maybe I haven't played bullet hell in so long but some of these attacks are damn near impossible to dodge, then I'm sitting there trying to figure out how to Spare everyone. Time consuming. I'm thinking about just killing everyone from now on just to see how the game ends.
I have it and tried playing it a bit. I'm a few save points in and just can't bring myself to become interested. I'm consoling crying creatures and talking to frogs, and dealing with some benevolent goat creature on my phone. It just seems boring, and pointless. One day I'm sure I'll be all like "THE TIME IS NOW" and play it... who knows when that'll be tho. It's just got a boring vibe. I'd rather play Animal Crossing.

It's a pretty fun and unique game and it feels like a lot of heart was put into it. A lot of people complain about the fans but it is no where near as bad as they say it is, they treat it like it's worse than the SU fambase but in actuality it's millions of times better. It's literally just memes, a handful of edgy children/man/womanchildren, and a pretty large group of reasonable people. Sure, it has a few bad apples, but you don't have to partake in the community to enjoy the game. I watched a playthrough on youtube after seeing the sans ending and liking it
the emphasis on not killing anyone seems fun initially, but I can see how after a while it could get repetitive. The pacifist ending seemed heavy handed with the friendship is magic themes

most games depict death by and large as "dying" - there's leadup to it, the death event happens, it's climactic, some mourning maybe, etc, etc

you killed someone, that area is now empty, there is an NPC-sized hole in the content progression for that zone
pretty simple design choice but it's true to life and really got to me, even if idgaf about most of the other shit
I loved it. The emotions I felt while playing it brought back memories of what it was like to play games when I was a kid. I very much doubt any other game is going to come out anytime soon that made me feel the way Undertale made me felt while playing through it.
Before I played it, I'd thought that I'd hate it. Ended up loving it and getting attached to the characters. I can't bring myself to do a genocide run.

I watched several LPs of this game. I couldn't finish Earthbound because I always get bored of JRPGs no matter how good they are, but from what I played of Earthbound I can see why it's praised so much. Many people compared Undertale to Earthbound, but I failed to see the resemblance, maybe it's because I played too little of Earthbound, maybe it's because I saw too little of Undertale, who knows.
The whole game looks like shit, which bothered me a lot. The art style contradicted itself way too much for me. Some stuff is black and white, some stuff is fully colored, but the way it was brought together looked inconsistent. Parts of the game look like Off! in terms of style, parts look like shit (I have the first dungeon in mind when typing this), my point is, it's inconsistent and looks bad.
The gameplay has a fun gimmick, but it looked like something that'd belong in a flash game considering how shallow it was. Then again, that could be said about a lot of games.
The plot was gay.
Overall, I'm complaining about games I've never played once again.

The inconsistency doesn't allow you to anticipate particular settings + the moods which come with them.
Take the Ruins -> Meeting Sans in the forest bit. You are in a very simplistically colored hallway, solid colors, walk through a long corridor and go through the main entrance. The camera is panned up to give you a view of the tall trees, ambient noises play. Detail. Lots more detail.
It feels like you're stepping out into the real world.
If you're like most people, you have accidentally killed Toriel, reloaded a save, spared her, but then Flowey points out he knows what REALLY happened, and implies that you will HAVE to pay for consequences eventually.
That just puts a better emphasis on not knowing what to expect.
Even the enemy attacks were all super unique. The game never makes itself mundane through any of its systems. (Besides maybe inventory + box shit)
Is all that pan-/demi-/whateversexuality actually canon to the game? The only thing I know about Undertale is the art style and that you don't have to kill every enemy. That's it.

Ok imagine you're making a game and there are some characters where if there was some kind of relationship it would be funny/ give the world a more knit together story.
One instance is these 2 bro dude knights who speak in that typical frat boy style. Like a parody of /fit/. During the fight you can make one of them get nervous around the other, "in a totally not- like- not in that way bro" way
Another is just one lesbian crush between 2 misfit characters, where it actually kinda makes more sense if both of them are girls. (There's this one pathetic weeb scientist character who no one likes, but their passion for their shit is admirable. It would be less admirable if they were a guy)
Think of it this way; he added just these 2 gay relationships in the story where it doesn't really make a big impact/ isn't really the subject. It could've been a regular relationship and it wouldn't have mattered. That's the point. It doesn't matter.
No, no one is pansexual. The fact that people think the main character is strictly non-orientated is retarded. The character is an ambiguous/ androgynous because of the such low detail. Also they're a child. It was just an easier way to assign customization to the character without having a set of 2 different sprites for male/ female characters. At one point I wrote out my thoughts on Undertale, it took up three posts and the thread was immediately deleted afterwards so at this point I don't like to talk about Undettale out of spite but I'll summarise my opinions.
The ACT system is a creative and interesting battle mechanic that offers a different experienec with each enemy type. The personality infused into each and evet aspect of the game makes this fun for a while, but unfortunately once you figure out the gimmick if an enemy they become boring to fight again, this is only made worse by how easy the game is.
The game combines the JRPG and bullet hell genre, but it's extremelt barebones on each side. I'm not especially well versed in bullet hells, but eje I know that Undertale has incredibly tame fights to what you would see in games like Touhou and the JRPG side is a joke compared to SMT and other great JRPG's.

I absolutely despised the 2deep4u attempt at exploring how people interact with characters in videogames. It's been done before, it wasn't clever then amd it's not clever now. Yes, I replayed it to kill everyone, it's a videogame and I want to experience all the content it has to offer, Toby's attempt at deconstructing the genre is laughable at best, especially with the "LV is Level of Violence and EXP is Execution Points" nonsense. Aside from that drivel you have to put up with in the Genocide route, it's a very enjoyable playthrough. It's far too easy aside from the boss fights, but the fact that your character seems completely unhinged, psychotic and powerful leads to a lot of fun, not to mention the Sans boss fight is the best in the game.
All in all, it's pretty good, I think Toby did well in making a Mother-esque game even if Undertale isn't quite as good as Mother 2 or 3. The best thing about Undertale is the heart and soul that went into it and the personality that the game emits, it's a fresh of breath air from all the soulless cash-ins you get from videogames these days and it's probably why so many people like it.

It contaminated an aesthetic I love (Japanese Indie games) with an aesthetic I despise (Tumblrshit) in a really cringey, hamfisted way, so I fucking loathe it for that reason.
When I saw its intro and how it was basically a American Tumblr fag "getting" indie Japanese games and "contributing" to the genre with his own "le twist", I dry-heaved. Pretty much everything in the game is a barely disguised ripoff, and plebs ate it up because they're plebs.
Exactly like Hollywood doing an anime/foreign film "with a proper budget, orchestra, director, and REAL actors!" or Dreamworks xD remaking and shitting up a Miyazaki movie with memejokes. Burgers, stay away from Japan's mysterious understated beauty.
