The mixing on illmatic is deliberatey muddled. It's supposed to be grimey like nyc, I just find it rather boring to listen to without any stand out instruments and very basic rhythyms. I listen to a lot of acid jazz and funk though.

I can see what you're saying about illmatic though. I'm personally a fan of it. It's simple but dynamic, definitely a matter of taste. The baseline in NY State of Mind is pretty great if you have the equipment.
