Yes, that's how it works, and nothing.

Basically, it depends on where you live, but when you die your assets (everything you have) are piled up and your creditors (people and organisations you owe money to) each take what they're owed. The remaining amount is shared between your inheritors. If there's nothing left then nothing gets shared obviously, and if the pile isn't big enough to pay off the debt, the creditors are shit out of luck.
