I don't think we do. We're just fooled into believing so because the illusion of reality obligated by the brain is so real and its effect is compounded by the fact that all that real stuff feels like it's happening to "you".
When the honest truth is that if you removed your own brain from the equation, the universe you know would almost end until a new brain or "conduit for receiving and interpreting existence" would naturally take its place at the very moment of experience.
