There's something like 6000 total productions if I recall.
Not watching bottom-tier tripe eliminates the vast majority of that. It doesn't help that so much anime is either a glorified commercial or a poor adaptation of a manga/LN/VN.
I'm not really willing to spend time watching harem, mecha or bad adaptations anymore either, so there's only so much released per year to occupy my time. I've found nothing I care enough about to procure and watch in my searches that has already been released.
Now manga is a different story.

Yeah. let me guess you've only used /a/ for this. that being said /a/ only talks about the "popular" shows every season. there are tons of shit every season that /a/ actively watches but never talks about say for one day a week right after it airs for one thread, but its still good shows.
Needless to say I'm calling bullshit. You just don't want to take the time or effort to look for new shows that /a/ didn't hand to you on a silver platter.

There is still tons of stuff I want to watch. World Masterpiece Theater, Dezaki, Sailor Moon, Doremi, The Yuasa shows I haven't seen, Utena, etc. Tons of stuff I am looking forward to next year too, with things like Amanchu and Milky holmes movie with the original staff and Kizumonogatari and more. Really nice, especially since this year was pretty bad.
