Whats the langauge barrier like there?
>>25342220
Pretty big, but it's manageable. I haven't learned anything besides some basic expressions cause there really is no need, even though most of the people don't speak English. I just pointed at the food I wanted, showed the taxi drivers where I wanted to go (though their knowledge of the city topography is godawful, to my surprise so often times I had to guide them myself using Googe Maps) and luckily girls that like white guys know English well enough.
On the other hand, it was frustrating to not understand what was going on around me, not understand the TV or even the God damn street signs. If I were to stay there longer (which I plan to, in the not so distant future), I'll definitely take a language course or some shit.

Don't bother with rural shit. Unless you plan on being a farmer or you're already wealthy, you're much better off renting something on the outskirts of whatever city you want to be near and buying a car for driving on the weekends.
>>25347680
Hey I'm actually leaving after 2 years of science to do architecture...
My mom's friend is a professor, we had a tour in high school. Turns out you need 7+ years to get licensed but arch school isn't half as much math as you think it is. They're basically artists who work in a firm which is a combo of artists and engineers...everyone thinks it's math though. "Art school" is great, but it turns out the actual job is a lot more administrative work than you probably signed up for. That's the one major catch is that you only get to be creative a sliver of the time.

New York is not that great. Unless you make +$150,000 a year your view will not look like that, it will be some fucking housing project courtyard where you get to watch a bunch of dumbass welfare "puerto ricans" (who were born in the us and have never been to puerto rico) blast their shitty music and barbeque your tax dollars in the form of chicken bought with food stamps until 2am every day.

This city is a shithole.

McDonalds is disgusting, Wall Street is the record holder for highest number of douchebags per square inch, and Ground Zero is just a tourist hotspot.

Exactly. Its nice to hear that someone else feels my pain. All I hear about everytime I talk to other people is how they just love New York. People here are so fucking deluded. They only think New York is the "center of the universe" because 99% of them are self-centered egomaniacs who only think of things they do as acceptable. I am so sick of rudeness, blatant disregard for other people's whereabouts, people throwing their trash on the ground or just leaving it places like subway cars. I've had scumbags try to sucker me for money, I've had bums attack me physically multiple times, I make "a lot of money" and live in a 3 bedroom apartment next to an auto shop. Fuck I hate this place.

>>25348658
NYC is. I live in the Bronx and in my nice middle class neighborhood I have 4 great pizzerias, a cigar bar, an excellent burger joint, amazing Chinese food, a sushi bar, convenient public transportation but I can actually park my car in a driveway should I choose to have a car, nice parkways and walkways, a large park with a bocce court, etc.

I have a problem with creating an area that's "mine" around any house I live because I haven't been able to live in the same house for more than a year without having to move since I was 15, and now I'm 19 and too broke to do so because if there's a better apartment that's cheaper and better I move...

>>25347680
Original guy you responded to here.
Depends. There are two ends of the field, engineers who deal with the physics behind making the building work, and the designer who makes the building look good and serve its intended function for the client. The two collaborate together to form a cohesive building that looks and functions well. Design school can be fairly intensive, requiring 40 hours a week of legitimate work time to remain competitive, which can easily jump to 50 hours a week if you dick around with your friends in studio. It's not like business or other less intensive majors where you "just decide to give it a go", as it requires a genuine connection to the field and buildings. I spent 3 years fucking around with physical therapy and internalized the realization that I was just in the field because I liked running, dropped everything and went into architecture, which had interested me since elementary school. I find myself always looking at buildings and analyzing them.
You can also simply study architecture and it's history. My Architectural Theory class was taught by a teacher with a PhD from Princeton who just specialized in architectural history, with no formal design experience. If you were to go that route, I would recommend simply doing independent study unless you wanted to become a professor of some sort.
>>25348038
This guy also has the right idea. As I mentioned before, design school can be a lot of fun if you enjoy the work, but architects themselves have to do a lot of paperwork bullshit, with a lot of limitations imposed by clients that don't allow free creative control over your building unless you're a very famous architect. Chances are you wont be able to get to design something like pic related, and even then, the facade of this building was supposed to be stone but changed to metal to reduce costs.

Americlap here, those views are pretty expensive. Just living on the lower floors of those buildings can go for exorbitant prices.

>usual anti-city tirade rhetoric
You people are like fucking broken records. Nothing in that post actually described why the city is a shithole except for run ins with cherry picked people. I live in a fairly dense city and actually enjoy the reliability and accessibility of it, and the fact you don't have to fucking drive everywhere.
Rural areas are great too, with their own positives, but supporting banal suburbia is obnoxious.
