I use both equally to be honest. My job is kind of hard to explain but basically I make and implement financial models for the bank to use for predictions and so on. I did CS and maths because I liked both but there are guys here with either of them, physics degrees, economics, etc. Pretty much anything with a good ground in mathematical processes will make you a candidate.

You won't start on 150k though. I've just been promoted a couple of times.

I do a lot of modelling for risk. It's a large part of my job. I mentioned earlier that I travel a lot when the bank wants us to meet with potential partners; well when I do go to these people, my job is to give them a flavour of the models and methods we work on to show that they're stable, safe and profitable.

But I've also worked on statistical analysis software for market forecasts and the like.

The average IT monkey is probably looked down on in the offices, but people in my department aren't, to my knowledge. We work pretty closely with other departments in the institution so that we can make the models they require. It's a huge collaboration.
